Top of Utahns invited to pray for America at two Ogden locations Thursday

OGDEN — Top of Utah residents will have two opportunities to pray publicly during lunch hour Thursday at observances of the National Day of Prayer.

Thursday will be the 62nd annual observance of the day that is celebrated in communities across the country.

This year’s theme for the National Day of Prayer is Pray for America. The theme comes from the scriptural verse Matthew 12:21, which states in the New International Version: “In His name the nations will put their hope.”

Police investigate damages to West Haven LDS churches

WEST HAVEN — The Weber County Sheriff’s Office is investigating damages to seven air-conditioning units at two West Haven churches.

OGDEN — The Satya Center for Spiritual Living will present Mount Shasta keyboardist, harmonica and tabla player Anton Mizerak and singer Laura Berryhill for  “an evening of Celtic songs, transformational healing music and chants from around the world,” according to a news release from the Center.

Family: Mysterious Muslim influenced bombing suspect

WASHINGTON -- In the years before the Boston Marathon bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev fell under the influence of a new friend, a Muslim convert who steered the religiously apathetic young man toward a strict strain of Islam, family members said.

Under the tutelage of a friend known to the Tsarnaev family only as Misha, Tamerlan gave up boxing and stopped studying music, his family said. He began opposing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He turned to websites and literature claiming that the CIA was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Jews controlled the world.

Study: Gun ownership, conservatism contribute to Utah’s high suicide rate

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s dubious distinction as one of the leading states for suicide could be linked to its high rate of gun ownership and political conservatism, according to a newly released study.

The study was authored by Augustine J. Kposowa, a sociology professor at the University of California-Riverside.

Kposowa calculated for each state the overall suicide rate, percentage of households with firearms and percentage of votes cast for President George W. Bush in the 2000 election.

39th anniversary celebration set at Calvary Baptist in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY — Calvary Baptist Church is inviting everyone to Pastor France A. and Willene Davis’ 39th anniversary on April 28.

The anniversary celebration program will be at 3:30 p.m. in the historic Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1090 S. State St., in Salt Lake City.

The Rev. Stan Hillard, of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Houston and special assistant to the president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., will be the guest preacher at 11 a.m.

New Bible study starting in Ogden

OGDEN — Ogden FBC/NBCC will begin a new Bible study at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church, 2519 Jefferson Ave.

“Why?” is a great question for a Bible study, states a church news release.

Questions participants will look at in their study of Hosea include: Why would God call a prophet to marry an unfaithful woman? Why, after granting the woman a divorce, would God call the prophet to take her back when she lost everything her lovers gave her? More importantly, why does God call us his unfaithful wife?

Healing service set for Sunday at Elim

OGDEN — The Stephen Ministers of Elim Evangelical Lutheran Church, 575 23rd St., will conduct a full service of healing at 10 a.m. Sunday.

This service is open to any person of any faith who feels the need for physical, mental or spiritual healing, states a church news release.

The service will focus on prayers of healing, laying on of hands and anointing with the sign of the cross.

Stephen Ministers, along with Pastor DanaLee Simon, will lead the service, but everyone will be invited to take part in the laying on of hands.

‘Gospel Explosion’ today at New Zion in Ogden

OGDEN — New Zion Baptist Church, 2935 Lincoln Ave., will present the last of three “Women of the Word Gospel Explosion” programs at 5 p.m. today.

The program theme is, “New Life” (Isaiah 43:18-19), and the speaker will be Cheryl Lee, of Full Gospel Deliverance Center of Salt Lake City.

Gospel music, workshops highlight 43rd annual women's convention in Ogden

OGDEN — Women in the community are invited to participate as The Utah Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ holds its 43rd Annual Women’s Convention, April 30 through May 3, at Griffin Memorial Church of God In Christ, 2424 E Ave.

The theme is “Holy Women on Business for The King,” based on the New Testament Scripture Luke 2:49.

“We invite all to come and experience a week of spirit-filled worship, joyful praise, the dynamic Word of God and workshops,” said convention President Mother Carolyn Smith.

In light of some tragic news events of the past week, Smith said, the gospel of the church is needed.

Christian musician David Meece to perform in Brigham City, Clearfield

Contemporary Christian musician David Meece will perform Tuesday at the Brigham City Fine Arts Center, 58 S. 100 West, and on April 27 at Calvary Chapel Wasatch Front, 564 S. 800 East, in Clearfield.

Performances begin at 7 p.m. both evenings. A $5 donation will be taken at the door.

“(Meece) trained as a classical pianist, but he grew up listening to Top 40 Radio,” states a news release from People for Christ Ministry. “The result is evident on each of his 13 titles recorded since 1976. Come and be blessed by his dynamic music, hilarious comedy and deep truths discovered in his lifetime experiences.”
