OGDEN -- The Weber County Sheriff's Office is pleading for someone objective to come forward with any information regarding an early Sunday morning fight that led to the death of a 30-year-old Roy man.
About 100 people were at the Outlaw Saloon in West Haven when a fight broke out, said Weber County Sheriff Chief Deputy Terry Thompson.
Malachi Darcey suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, where he was taken off life support and died Monday morning.
The fight occurred at 1:37 a.m. Sunday and involved at least two groups of people, Thompson said. Sheriff's deputies and officers from neighboring jurisdictions were called.
As of Monday afternoon, Thompson said, police had questioned eight people who may have either witnessed or been involved in the fight.
"Right now, we are asking the public if they know of anything that happened prior to or during this incident to please come forward," Thompson said. "We would also really like to talk to someone who wasn't involved and will have an objective view."
The fight was not racially motivated and did not involve gang activity, Thompson said.
However, a woman friend Darcey was with was assaulted before the fight. Thompson said he could not comment any further on the details of the altercation.
On Monday afternoon, 10 of Darcey's family members attended a news conference where a family statement was read by McKay- Dee Hospital public relations director Chris Dallin.
The family did not answer any questions during the news conference and left immediately after the statement was read.
"The family asks for time and space to grieve and to begin to heal in private and appreciate your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time," Dallin read from the statement.
"Malachi passed away peacefully in the company of his family early this morning. He is survived by his wife, Casi; two beautiful little girls; his parents, Dave and Bambi; and his siblings, Annette, Isaac, CherylKay and Micah; and his friend, Sarah."
The family also thanked law enforcement and hospital officials and all those who have prayed and offered support.
Donations are being accepted for expenses and the future of Darcey's daughters at any Golden West Credit Union or any major credit union in Utah through an account in Malachi Darcey's name.
