OGDEN — Police are investigating whether a man who drove into oncoming traffic on Wall Avenue Wednesday morning had a medical problem that caused him to lose control of his car and strike two oncoming vehicles.
Police say Christopher Brinley, 31, of Ogden, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected through the driver’s side window of his dark green Mitsubishi. He was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury.
Terri Christensen was working inside Sampson Equipment at 860 Wall Ave. and saw part of the crash through the front window of the business. She ran out to help Brinley after she saw him lying on the pavement.
“He wanted to sit up,” she said. “I told him he needs to lay down.”
Northbound traffic on Wall Avenue was detoured between 7th and 9th streets as crews had to clear wreckage that spread out along a wide area of the roadway.
Brinley’s vehicle first hit a gray Toyota Camry driven by Carol Ann Nash, 55, then struck a red Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Glen J. Willie, 48, around 8:55 a.m. before crossing all lanes of traffic and coming to a stop on a sidewalk.
Police say Brinley was southbound on Wall Avenue when he veered into the northbound lanes. Witnesses told officers he was driving erratically just before the crash and a family member told police Brinley suffers from a medical condition that may have caused a seizure.
Nash was also taken to the hospital having suffered minor injuries and the male driver of the pickup was not hurt, Sangberg said.
The crash investigation is still ongoing and police have yet been able to interview Brinley. Sangberg said Brinley was in surgery Wednesday afternoon and he was unsure when investigators would be able to speak with him.
