OGDEN -- Police say a motorcyclist speeding upwards of 80 mph on a busy Ogden street crashed Thursday evening when he noticed a patrol car and abruptly applied his brakes.
The motorcyclist, Alex Jensen of Ogden, was cited for reckless driving and having no insurance.
The 22-year-old lost control of his bike while heading south on Harrisville Road near 2nd Street in Ogden. Witnesses reported he was speeding and switching back and forth between lanes just before the wreck, said Harrisville Police Chief Max Jackson.
An Ogden police cruiser was pulling out of a parking lot near the intersection when the officer spotted Jensen applying the brakes, causing the bike to slide more than 400 feet.
The bike struck the front bumper and front panel of the patrol car. Jensen slid about 150 feet in the crash, but he sustained only minor injuries, Jackson said.
"He was pretty lucky," Jackson said. "He was wearing a helmet, and that's probably what saved him."
Ogden Sgt. Chad Ledford, whose car was hit in the crash, is sergeant of the traffic and motorcycle division. Harrisville officers were placed on the investigation because Ledford's vehicle became part of the crash when it was struck.
Jensen was cited and will appear in court on the charges, which could cause him to lose his license. Also, Jensen was driving without insurance, which means he will be responsible for paying for the estimated $3,000 in damage to the patrol car.
