Man drowns at East Canyon reservoir

MORGAN -- A 28-year-old man from the Murray area drowned Saturday afternoon at the East Canyon reservoir when he tried to swim ashore from a boat.

Morgan County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Peay said the man was on a boat with family and friends near a remote beach on the west side of the reservoir about 2:30 p.m.

Peay said the boat was 20 to 40 feet from shore when the man told others he was going to swim in. "He went under and didn't come back up," Peay said.

The body was recovered about 60 feet from shore in water 15 feet deep about 4:30 p.m., Peay said.

The man's name is not being released, pending notification of relatives.
