South Ogden man dies in glider accident

MORGAN -- A 55-year-old South Ogden man was killed Saturday in a glider accident.

The victim is not being identified pending notification of relatives.

"He was in a single-seated glider, gliding above what's called the Mahogany Canyon area in Morgan County," said Sgt. Jason Lee of Morgan County Sheriff's Office.

Two more people were above in a double-seat glider, Lee said.

"They were circling the area. They lost contact with the single-seat," Lee said.

Thinking maybe the man had returned to the Mountain Green airport, they radioed ahead and discovered he had not landed there, Lee said.

"They continued circling the area and were able to see that the glider had crashed below them. They called 911 and reported it."

The call came around 4:30 p.m., Lee said. Paramedics were able to go directly to the crash site two miles north of Old Highway Road and 525 North in Morgan, but it was too late.

"The victim was deceased upon arrival of the crews," Lee said.

The cause of the crash is unknown and under investigation. A medical examiner will help determine if a health emergency contributed to the crash, Lee said.
