Pole2Pole: Swedish explorer's latest trek about to make history

Johan Ernst Nilson has been on top of the world in more ways than one, having trekked to the North Pole and summited Mount Everest.

While many before him have accomplished both of those feats, Nilson is closing in on becoming the first person to travel from the North Pole to the South Pole "carbon neutral" -- using primarily his own energy to make the long and perilous trek.

The real extreme sport: skiing in Afghanistan

KOH-E-BABA MOUNTAINS, Afghanistan -- A gaggle of villagers deep in the mountains of central Afghanistan stared in wonder as a professional snowboarder from New Zealand launched himself over half a dozen young children, two of them perched atop donkeys.

Endurance event tests racers in 'nation's icebox'

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. -- I lay breathless in a muddle of metal, rubber, survival gear and sweat, having flipped over my bicycle handlebars and landed flat on my back just a few feet from fresh timberwolf tracks.

Chariot riders battle in a “Ben Hur”-like chariot race at Chariot Wars during a three-day Mini Bike Winter Olympics Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, in Portland, Ore. Armed, variously, with all manner of foam-padded apparatus, at least five teams did battle on Saturday under gray skies for the pleasure of hoisting a three-foot-tall, homemade skull-bearing piece of welded junk, called the “Ben Hurt” trophy. 'Ben Hurt': Portland bike warriors smash and crash

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Looking like punk gladiators, teams of young adults on junk bikes pulling chariots made of junk parts frenetically chased each other around a makeshift arena, slamming each other and swinging away with foam clubs.

Maddison, LaVallee to try side-by-side jumps

SAN DIEGO -- What's better than one daredevil flying through the sky on New Year's Eve?

How about two.

Robbie Maddison and Levi LaVallee will make side-by-side attempts to break world records for the longest motorcycle and snowmobile jumps in the latest edition of the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. series

The concurrent jumps will be over a 300-foot water gap at Embarcadero Marina Park on San Diego Bay.

LaVallee of Longville, Minn., was scheduled to attempt his snowmobile jump last New Year's Eve in snowless San Diego but was seriously injured in a crash during training two weeks earlier.

Maddison wants to jump 400 feet, which would shatter the current record of 391 feet. LaVallee wants to break his record of 361 feet, set hours before his big wipeout.

Open your ears and embrace the sounds of the long, dark nights

DULUTH, Minn. -- Walking in the dark woods the other night, I saw a splash of white light on the trunks of the Norway pines up ahead. I was walking the single-track trails at Hartley Park, and I had a hunch about the source of light. Night mountain bikers.

I was right. A couple of them had stopped to chat at an intersection of trails. Night biking is becoming more common as riders try to stretch their summer riding season as long as they can before the snow falls. They use powerful LED lights on their bikes and helmets to see the way.

I, too, was moving through a tunnel of artificial light -- my headlamp. It's getting harder, as the Northern Hemisphere leans away from the sun, to get in a long walk after work.

It's tough, for those of us who enjoyed light until 9:30 or 10 p.m. a couple of months back, to let go of long light. It's hard not to feel as if our world is closing in on us. This is the first stage of the oppressiveness of winter. We are hopelessly diurnal creatures, adapted to function in daylight hours.

I remind myself not to fight the darkness, and much of the time it works. The night doesn't have to be the bad guy, I tell myself.

Hook and Ladder -- an ATV adventure in Moab

With all of the Moab OHV trails the Northern Utah ATV Trail Riders could have picked to ride, I was comfortable with the Hook and Ladder Trail. It did not sound life threatening like the other choices -- Hell's Revenge, Metal Masher, or Steel Bender.

Traveling south of Moab on Highway 191 past Wilson Arch, we turned east on State Road 179 where we unloaded and started our ride. Traveling north, we soon found ourselves climbing rock benches through scrub juniper. Sandy trails dotted with patches of slick rock took us around sandstone hoodoos and over landscape for which Moab is famous.

Man runs 50-mile Michigan race with jaw wired shut

LOWELL, Mich. -- A 50-mile run is an incredible challenge. Try it with your jaw wired shut.

Brandon Mulnix of Lowell in western Michigan accomplished the feat last weekend when he competed in the North Country Trail Run in the Manistee National Forest. He told The Daily News of Greenville (http://bit.ly/rg7c8r ) that he consumed only liquid nutrition while running for more than 12 hours.

"As an experienced ultra-marathon runner I wanted to challenge the community by doing something extreme," Mulnix said. "Last year at this race I had to quit at 25 miles into the race due to overheating. The chances of me finishing this year were even less, but I like a challenge."

Woman biking 2,350 miles to high school reunion

OWOSSO, Mich. -- Fifty years after graduating from Owosso High School, Lois Crawford isn't slowing down.

In fact, the 68-year-old, along with her husband Doug, is on the journey of her lifetime -- riding her bike from the couple's home in Baytown, Texas, to Sault Ste. Marie.

They plan to finish their approximately 2,350 mile journey just in time for Crawford's 50th high school reunion on Sept. 17.

"I'm probably in the best physical condition I've ever been in," Crawford said. "Everything I want to do in life requires some degree of physical fitness. I don't want to just sit around and play bridge."

The couple started off their ride July 10 in the driveway of the home. As of Monday morning, they were in northern Indiana. They expect to reach Lansing on Saturday, where the couple will spend some time with Doug's family before taking part in the Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw Bicycle Tour at the end of the month.

Hiking adventures of The Subway and Red Cave

"Come on!" yelled the guy on the four-wheeler. "People do it all the time. I'm sure you'll make it."

He shrugged as if our Mercury Villager minivan was made for crossing rivers, and then zoomed across the river, the water tugging at the tops of his wheel wells.

"All right," said Mike, my husband, taking a deep breath. And in we plunged.

This trip, a kid-free adventure in Zion National Park with a group of fit friends, was all about plunging. (And not the toilet variety, although there was some questionable water involved.)

We had come to Zion looking for good hiking, a little swimming, and some climbing. Zion and the surrounding area, full of deep slots, windswept rock, and the meandering Virgin River, combines the best of nature into a luring siren song of adventure.

Salazar, Bowerbank lead local amateurs to Gatorade Free Flow Tour finals

OGDEN -- This past weekend, the Gatorade Free Flow Tour hit Utah at local parks 12th Street Jumps in Ogden and We Are One in Midvale for BMX dirt and skate park contests, respectively.

Victor Salazar earned his second spot in the finals, advancing from 12th Street Jumps, while returning five-time finalist Tyson Bowerbank will represent his home town when he competes in the Finals in Salt Lake City this September.

On Saturday, 12th Street Jumps hosted the final BMX dirt contest of the season and named the top three competitors to the Finals roster, lined up for this coming week.

'Expedition Impossible' is a Moroccan adventure

LOS ANGELES -- "Survivor" producer Mark Burnett has found yet another way to toy with gung-ho contestants in his new ABC series, "Expedition Impossible," which sends 13 three-person teams on a trek across daunting Moroccan terrain.

Burnett contends he's doing the folks a favor.

"I have an obligation to the contestants to give them a real adventure and not a pretend adventure. If it wasn't a real adventure they would have been cheated," says Burnett, himself a thrill-seeker who joined the British military at age 17 and served as a paratrooper.

Utah's hot spots

DIAMOND FORK CANYON -- Right next to the edge of a stream swollen with cold spring runoff and exposed to the rain, Gary Sanders relaxed comfortably in nothing but swim trunks and flip-flops.

His secret: Being submerged up to the neck in 100-degree water streaming from the hillside and into a neatly constructed pool lined with large rocks.

"It could be the middle of winter for all I care," said Sanders, one of many to be found at Utah's popular Fifth Water Hot Springs over Memorial Day weekend.

While some prefer the relative convenience and safety of public swimming pools and developed hot springs resorts, others prefer a more natural experience.

Compared to some other western states, Utah isn't exactly thought of as a primitive hot springs mecca. But the state offers a handful of gems that draw visitors from around the state and country.

Hot springs have long been an important resource in Utah, from the natives who used them for their healing properties to pioneer settlers who found them a welcome rest for weary bones and a source of warmth.

G4G will carry the "OG" and the entry level "Grom" models of Freeline Skates available on shelves immediately. The retailer also offers extreme sports junkies a selection of Swiss bikeboards, European skis, custom decks, kiteboarding gear, skateboards and accessories which inspire an active, healthy lifestyle.
