Director of youth and family for Northern Utah YMCA retires

OGDEN — While teaching at a local elementary school, Marsha Garfield Prantil noticed many of the students lingered behind after school because they had nothing to do until their parents got home from work.

Weber libraries offer help to kids after school

OGDEN — The Weber County Library system offers a free after-school program to help kids learn skills in math, science, technology and crafts.

The program is designed for elementary-aged children and is offered at these locations:

• Ogden Valley Branch, 131 S. 7400 East, Huntsville;

• Pleasant Valley Branch, 5568 S. Adams Ave., Ogden; and

• Southwest Branch, 1950 W. 4800 South, Roy.

The program will be offered until May 23.

Communities benefit from healthy youth recreation programs

In my world, life’s greatest lessons have been learned through a competitive nature and the belief that if failure exists, it came from people who didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

To me, it is all about focus. If you plan to win, your dedication to the game plan and your desire to be the best you can be must be channeled so that they are not affected by distractions.

OGDEN -- The Ogden School Board has said yes to an offer from YMCA in Utah to construct a new building for after-school programs and community classes in exchange for use of land.

Salt Lake City launches new afterschool program

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City is partnering with the Northwest Community Center to provide a free afterschool program for teens.

YMCA celebrates after-school programs

OGDEN — After-school programs designed to keep kids safe and help them academically will be the focus of a celebration Wednesday.

Mayor Matthew Godfrey will kick off festivities with a proclamation in support of after-school programs at a rally at 3 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 2549 Washington Blvd.

Activities continue with a large family fun night running from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fat Cats Family Fun Center at 23rd Street and Washington Boulevard.

YMCA keeps children busy after school

OGDEN — Gone are the days when school children would board a bus headed to the YMCA. Now, the YMCA comes right to the child with 14 after-school programs at schools throughout Weber and Ogden school districts.

Jennifer Mortensen, site manager for the YMCA After School Program at James Madison Elementary, said it is a great way for students to have supervised, structured time as well as some great play time.
