Area man grows state record pumpkin

LEHI -- Matt McConkie of Mountain Green has set a state record with the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers association.

His giant pumpkin weighed 1,169 pounds Saturday at a weigh off at Thanksgiving Point, according to information on the group's Facebook page.

The previous record was set in 2006 by Kenny Blair of Bountiful, according to the group's website.

Blair's pumpkin weighed 1,104 pounds.

McConkie started growing pumpkins three years ago because "they're just really fun to grow. It's just gardening at another level."

McConkie and his neighbor, Tyler Quigley, spent a year raising pumpkins at an undisclosed location in Washington Terrace, hoping for the state record.
