It is never too early to care for a child's teeth! Dental health starts at a very early age and properly caring for children's teeth and gums can prevent many dental issues such as cavities and gum disease.
Infants' gums and teeth can be cleaned using a wet washcloth or piece of gauze. A child's first dental visit should coincide with their first birthday. This allows the dentist to look for any dental abnormalities, and to educate the parents about an appropriate dental hygiene regimen. Early on parents should assume the responsibility of caring for their children's oral health which includes brushing and flossing. As children grow and their dexterity improves, so will their dental responsibilities. Children should always be monitored to ensure adequate plaque removal.
Fluoride helps strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay. It is usually found in your community's water supply. The water on Hill Air Force Base and in Davis County is fluoridated to the proper amount to provide an adequate amount of daily fluoride. The pediatrician can prescribe fluoride supplements, if indicated. Before age two, children should use nonfluoridated toothpaste and at age two children can transition to begin using a small pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste on a soft bristled toothbrush. Other sources of fluoride can include mouth rinses and more concentrated topical fluorides that are administered at dental cleanings and check-up appointments.
Sealants provide an additional benefit that protects teeth from cavity formation. Sealants are a clear or white-shaded liquid applied to the grooved surfaces of the molar and premolar teeth which hardens and will act as a barrier to cavity formation. Sealants are adhered on the permanent teeth and can be first placed at around age six, when the first molars have erupted. Although sealants are an adjunct to reducing the probability of decay (cavities) from forming on the teeth surfaces, a daily brushing and flossing regimen should still be maintained.
Regular dental visits, water fluoridation, healthy dental home care habits of brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day and using an approved mouth rinse are many ways to keep your family's dental health in good order. If you have any questions or concerns regarding you or your child's dental hygiene, contact your family dentist.
