Hill Airman and Family Readiness Center gets a new director

He may be a newcomer, but Tom Badman, the Airman and Family Readiness Center's new director, is already hard at work to make Hill's AFRC an exceptional service provider for the base community.

"Our key goal is to assist every organization in becoming more mission capable, more mission ready," Badman said in regards to his goals for the center.

Badman, who has worked as a Community Readiness Consultant at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and as a Supervisory Community Readiness Consultant at Robins AFB, Ga., has also served for 22 years in the Air

Volunteer nominations due by March 31

The Airman and Family Readiness Center is looking for nominations for this year's Volunteer Excellence Award. Nomination packages will be accepted for federal civilians, family members and retirees who performed outstanding volunteer work of a sustained and direct nature. Nominations are due by March 31.

The award will be presented at the Volunteer Recognition Breakfast held on April 19 at 8:30 a.m. at Club Hill. The breakfast is free for volunteers, their spouses and supervisors, leadership and co-workers, space permitting.

2010 AFAF Kick-off Campaign Tournament highlights need for funds

On March 8, members of the 75th Force Support Squadron and the 75th Security Forces Squadron went head to head on the basketball court in the 2010 Air Force Assistance Fund (AFAF) Kick-off Campaign.

The campaign started off with eight basketball teams that morning, said 2nd Lt. Nathan Greiner, a member of the 507th Combat Sustainment Squadron and co-leader, along with 2nd Lt. Peter Densmore of the 75th FSS, of the 2010 AFAF Kick-off Campaign.

Through a series of bracketed games, the teams were narrowed down to two, which played in the championship game on Monday at 2 p.m.

Creating sparks in children's minds about outdoor activities

Flames lit up the excitement in children's eyes as members of the Military 4-H Outdoor Recreation Club, a part of the Youth Programs on base, learned how to create fire using flint and tinder Feb. 27.

The club's first activity was held at Wetland Discovery Point in Kaysville as children learned basic survival skills for the outdoors and played a game where they pretended to be stranded on an island.

Year of the Air Force Family: Families gather at library for activity, 'Love Always'

Here at Hill Air Force Base, the library isn't just for reading. It's also a place to gather with others who are waiting for the day when their spouse or parent returns home from deployment.

On Feb. 24, the library sponsored its first get-together for the families of deployed troops.

Vaccine could protect against cervical cancer

Sun Valley Charity Foundation representative Reginald Reeves and Craig Nielsen, of the Airman and Family Readiness Center, will be coordinating the delivery of 50,000 pounds of potatoes donated to Hill Air Force Base personnel and families who are directly or indirectly supporting the war-fighting effort throughout the world.

The primary donor is Tom Holm of the Idaho Falls area.

A semitrailer full of loose potatoes will be parked in the south parking lot of Building 150 (AFRC) on March 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

So bring bags and stop by and get some spuds.

AEF Retreat soon for those deploying

Team Hill is holding an Air Expeditionary Force Retreat for those families with a member soon to deploy or recently returned. The event to be held April 9-11, features free lodging and meals but requires a $50 reservation fee per family.

Heading down the 'Right Track'

The basement at the Hill Air Force Base Chapel was bustling with racing excitement Tuesday evening as children watched their handmade cars race down a sloped track.

The Hill AFB Chapel Awana club hosted its second annual Grand Prix event March 2 to encourage fun and friendly competition among its local members.

'Two Deuces' on March 19 helps OSC scholarships

The Hill Officers' Spouses' Club, a nonprofit private organization, raises funds throughout the year to sponsor welfare projects at Hill Air Force Base and surrounding communities. The Hill OSC will stage its largest fundraiser of the year, Two Deuces Casino Night, on March 19, to fund scholarships for local military and Department of Defense dependents.

HOSC scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 and assist high school seniors, continuing students and degree-pursuant military spouses.

2010 Military Child Award nominations due today

Nominations close February 25 for the 2010 Military Child Award, administered by program officials in San Antonio, Texas. The award recognizes the service and sacrifices of the nation's youngest heroes. Anyone can nominate a deserving child for the award, but the nominee must be enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System and be between the ages of 8 and 18.

Around Hill: Air Force Youth Aviation Camp packets due soon

Air Force Youth Aviation Camp packets must be turned in by March 12. Youth will be required to submit their packets and schedule a interview date the week of March 16-18.

The Air Force Teen Aviation Camp is a residential six-day program which provides youth a glimpse of what Cadets attending the United States Air Force Academy experience.

Year of the Air Force Family: Youth class on baby sitter safety, practical information

The finer points of being a great baby sitter were reviewed after answering an introduction question about why a group of young students had chosen to attend an all-day Feb. 20 class at the Youth Center. Susan Smith-Parry, Northern Utah Red Cross safety and health instructor, introduced herself to the nine students prepared to be informed about safety and other such things as what foods are appropriate for what age ranges in children you baby-sit.

Smith-Parry was quick to point out that both boys and girls make great baby sitters as two boys arrived first for the class.
