Philip and Elva Merkley

Philip and Elva Merkley of Layton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends on June 5.

They were married on June 6, 1950, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple.

Born and raised in Duchesne, he served in the U.S. Navy during and after World War II. He served in the Eastern Canada LDS Mission. He graduated from Brigham Young University and taught school from 1951 to 1985. He built homes for his family, friends and others. Active in the LDS Church, he served in the elders quorum, Young Men, Scouting and in bishoprics. He enjoys music, reading, carpentry, fishing and hunting.

She was born and raised in Burley, Idaho. She graduated from Burley High School and attended BYU, where she met her husband. She graduated from Weber State College in June 1967 and taught school at Doxey, Whitesides and Adams elementary schools. Active in the LDS Church, she served in Cub Scouts, as ward organist, temple organist and positions in Relief Society. She enjoys playing piano and organ, oil painting and sewing.

They served an LDS mission in Majuro, Marshall Islands, where they taught in public schools and helped LDS students prepare for BYU-Hawaii. They then served as temple workers.

They had five boys and include a sixth boy from the Indian Placement program: Jeffrey and Marilyn Merkley, David and Marian Merkley, Daniel and Pamela Merkley, Farley and Colleen Merkley Matthew and Cindy Merkley, and Sterling John. They have 30 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
