Ned A and Patricia Thornock Newman of Roy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a surprise weekend planned by their sons. The couple will also celebrate the occasion with their sons and daughters-in-law on a cruise to the Caribbean in November.
They were married on March 17, 1960, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Logan Temple.
He grew up in Bothwell and graduated from Bear River High School. She lived in Southern Utah and graduated from Beaver High School. Both are graduates of Utah State University, where they met.
He was a navigator in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, most of it in rescue. They lived in Texas, California, Scotland, Spain, Florida, Utah, New Mexico and Alaska. He also served a year in Vietnam. After his retirement, they moved to Roy, and she worked at the Ogden Internal Revenue Service for 18 years. Since her retirement, they have served an LDS service mission to the Ogden LDS Cannery, where they still volunteer.
They are involved in other church activities, including working with the West Weber Special Needs Mutual. They enjoy gardening, reading, genealogy, traveling and especially spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Their five sons and spouses are Kelly and Jill Newman, Kristopher and JulieAnn Newman, Maurice and Sharon Newman, Kasey and Marian Newman, and Kimball and Melissa Newman. They have 20 grandchildren and a new great-granddaughter. They also consider Chanar Goodrich, a young woman from Mongolia, as a daughter.
