Top-ranked archer Ellison has Olympics in his sights

DALLAS -- Rarely do the Olympics, javelinas and chewing tobacco wind up in the same story.

But then, rarely do the Olympics encounter someone like Brady Ellison.

Brady Ellison keeps on winning in archery

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- American archer Brady Ellison had a bad day at the Pan American Games, and it was still good enough for gold.

The world's top-ranked archer overcame a sub-par performance to defeat Crispin Duenas of Canada on Saturday, capping a nearly perfect year and showing he remains the world's most dominant shooter.

"I was just a little bit off, maybe a just a bit weak in my shot," the 22-year-old Ellison said. "It's archery, sometimes the body is just different. But I shot good on the arrows that I needed to shoot well to win the match."

Brady Ellison is the first archer ever to win three straight World Cup events.

Imagine if he was shooting the way he wanted.

"As bad as it may sound, I'm pleased I am winning, but I'm disappointed in how I'm shooting. I feel I can shoot even better than I'm shooting right now," said Ellison, who won stages in Croatia and Turkey before taking his third straight recurve gold medal earlier this month at a World Cup event in Ogden, Utah.

OGDEN -- Brady Ellison struck gold three times including his third consecutive Archery World Cup gold in the men's individual recurve as the U.S. netted four medals during the first day of finals at Lindquist Field.

"Winning three in a row is amazing, but the fact that I was able to come here and shoot strong in front of a home crowd is so awesome," Ellison said. "Going out there and every match winning a gold medal with the USA crowd behind us...you can't ask for anything better than that."

Team USA poised for possible 8 golds in archery

OGDEN -- Just as the U.S. women's compound team was setting a new world record on the left side of the field, the women's recurve team learned they had missed the gold medal round by a single point.

Humid conditions and a grueling sun set the tone for eliminations during the third stage of the Archery World Cup at Weber State University. The field was quickly cut down to medal contenders in each category, setting the stage for this weekend's showdown for gold at Lindquist Field.

Team USA is poised for possible gold in eight events, including the women's team compound, after the trio of Erika Anschutz, Christie Colin and Jamie Van Natta shot a world record 236 in the semifinal match against Canada.
