Woman can retract 2004 guilty plea for sledgehammer attack

CHICAGO -- A judge in Lake County, Ill., issued a rare ruling Tuesday that will allow a woman who is seven years into a 30-year prison sentence to retract her guilty plea for attempted murder.

The judge ordered that Sandra Rogers, who pleaded guilty in 2004 to attacking her ex-husband and his wife with a sledgehammer, return to Lake County for a new trial.

Clearfield shooting suspect to face trial in May

FARMINGTON -- An 18-year-old man charged with attempted murder is getting a speedy trial.

"Do you waive your right to a speedy trial?" said Judge Michael G. Allphin on Monday.

"I would like a speedy trial," said Daniel Alonso Garcia, who is being held in Davis County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash-only bail.

Garcia is charged with the discharge of a firearm, with serious bodily injury and gang enhancement, a first-degree felony; attempted murder, a first-degree felony; riot, a third-degree felony; and possession of a dangerous weapon, a class B misdemeanor.

Wife of shooting suspect not competent for trial

FARMINGTON -- The woman who police said told her husband to shoot their neighbor has been found incompetent to stand trial.

Meloney Toone Selleneit, 54, is charged with the first-degree felony of criminal solicitation and second-degree felony of purchase, transfer or possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

She will be transferred from Davis County Jail to Utah State Hospital for treatment.

Judge on Matthew David Stewart case: Locked court a rarity

OGDEN — It remains to be seen if the courtroom doors will be locked at the May 14 hearing for accused cop-killer Matthew David Stewart.

The doors to 2nd District Judge Noel Hyde’s courtroom have been locked from the outside during the past two hearings for Stewart.

In each case, a Salt Lake City reporter was locked out of the hearing after arriving a bit late.

Clearfield teen charged with felonies may take plea deal

FARMINGTON -- An 18-year-old Clearfield man charged with attempted murder is considering a plea deal, his attorney says.

Clearfield man, 18, faces felony charges in shooting

FARMINGTON — An 18-year-old man who had been held in Farmington Bay Youth Correction Center has been moved to Davis County Jail and is facing felony charges in a gang-related shooting.

Daniel Alonso Garcia, 18, of Clearfield, was booked in the jail on Wednesday in lieu of a $50,000 bail after a juvenile court judge certified him as an adult.

Garcia was arrested in January by Clearfield police when he was still 17. His birthday was Jan. 28.

3rd competency evaluation sought in Centerville shooting over 'telepathic rape'

FARMINGTON -- The results of a third evaluation are expected to show whether Michael L. Selleneit is competent to stand trial for shooting his neighbor.

Selleneit, 52, of Centerville, appeared before Judge Thomas L. Kay on Thursday. However, prosecutors could not proceed with the case because of conflicting results from two competency evaluations.

Arraigned Tuesday on a charge of first-degree felony attempted murder, Tammy Crane, 38, was back in court Thursday for a status conference where her public defender asked for evaluations to ensure she is competent to stand trial.
