LAYTON -- City officials have voted to extend the financial audit contract for Hansen Bradshaw Malmrose & Erickson of Bountiful.

The city council recently voted unanimously to extend the contract with the auditing group for three years. Before the extension, the firm was in the fifth year of a five-year contract.

City Manager Alex Jensen said in exchange for the extension, the Bountiful-based firm lowered the current year's price of an audit from $29,000 to $27,000.

Jeff Ambrose of Crane, Christensen, Palmer & Associates said that the city’s finances are very healthy.

“The city has virtually no debt,” said Ambrose. “We don’t have any long-term debt here.”

Ambrose said that Harrisville is one of the few cities his firm audits that doesn’t have any debt.

Defense Department nowhere near ready for financial audit

WASHINGTON -- The Department of Defense has waged war on two fronts in the Middle East, kept complicated fighter, bomber and transport aircraft flying all over the world and schooled troops in high-level intelligence gathering, but it hasn't won the battle of the balance sheet after more than 20 years of engagement.

It's not that the department can't pass a routine financial audit, giving taxpayers an assurance the Pentagon knows how its spending their dollars in these tight budget times.

It's worse than that.

A performance audit of the Utah Transit Authority shows the agency might not have the money to build wanted future projects or even operate projects that are currently under construction.

Audit reveals extra money in Farmington's reserve fund

FARMINGTON -- This city has an enviable problem: The most recent financial audit revealed it ended the 2010-11 fiscal year with too much money in a reserve fund.

State guidelines allow a municipality to have an unrestricted fund balance of up to 18 percent, and the city's $1.7 million surplus exceeded that mark for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011. The fund is in excess of 18 percent by approximately $572,982, according to the audit, which was released Dec. 20.

"Even though it's something we need to watch closely, it's a good thing," Mayor Scott Harbertson said of the excess in reserve.
