Truck sales spur hope for economic recovery in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY -- Truck sales in the Top of Utah are indicating a better economic future for the area.

Truck sales were better in January 2012 than in January 2011, said Russ Layton, general manager of Tony Divino Toyota in Riverdale.

He expects those numbers to improve throughout this year.

Ogden incentivizes new showroom for auto dealer

OGDEN -- The city administration wants to create a redevelopment area to provide tax increment to John Watson Chevrolet as an incentive for the construction of a new $3 million showroom.

The proposal calls for the dealership, located at 3535 Wall Ave., to receive $10,000 to $20,000 in tax increment annually for 10 years, said Tom Christopoulos, the city's deputy director of community and economic development.

The exact amount of tax increment provided to John Watson Chevrolet would depend on the property tax generated by the new showroom, Christopoulos said.

After 18 years, couple reunites with their '81 Corvette

HOOPER -- Rick Pilarczyk has been joyfully reunited with an old flame, and even his wife is happy about it.

What is it with guys and cars? First loves never die. In this case, it's Pilarczyk's 1981 Chevrolet Corvette.

Pilarczyk and his wife, Michelle, bought the car in 1986, when he was just 27 and she was 22. Because the car -- in mahogany metallic with gold metal flake paint -- was one of only 3,000 of its kind made in 1981, they knew its value wouldn't depreciate. But 18 years ago, Rick needed money to help start a business, so he sold his beloved sports car.

Layton auto showrooms on the mend

LAYTON — Two dealerships are showing that the auto industry can still succeed, at least on a local level.

Cutrubus is celebrating the grand opening of its Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership today, while Young Buick GMC is busy remodeling its showroom. Both dealerships are on Main Street and are an important part of the business community.

“A lot of very smart economists say the auto industry is going to help lead the county out of the recession,” said Ben Hart, Layton’s economic development specialist. “We are seeing that on a local level. And the fact that people are wanting to reinvest in their businesses right now says a lot about how the economy is improving.”

'Confused' woman nearly hits students while driving the wrong way

CLEARFIELD -- An elderly woman nearly hit seven junior high school students when she was driving the wrong way.

The woman, estimated to be in her 70s, was driving a sedan south in a northbound lane on State Street around 2:30 p.m., Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Susan Poulsen said. Seven junior high students were in a crosswalk at 700 South, and the woman drove around them to avoid hitting them, Poulsen said.

A deputy saw this and pulled the woman over. She told the deputy she had been in a left-hand turning lane and got confused.

The woman was not cited.

DETROIT -- We saw the USA in them. We drove them to the levee. We even worked on our night moves in their back seats.
