SYRACUSE -- The Government Finance Officers Association of The United States and Canada has awarded the city its certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the second straight year.

The award is considered the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The award is specific to the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011

Stephen Marshall, city finance director, said he intends to work to receive the award for the city each year.

The GFOA is a nonprofit association serving approximately 16,000 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

UTC names Ogden businessman CEO of the Year

OGDEN — Jerry Ropelato, chief executive officer of TechMediaNetwork, was named the CEO of the Year at the Utah Technology Council’s annual members’ meeting.

Ropelato’s award is the result of voting by the UTC Executive Committee, comprising Utah’s leading technology industry representatives.

Ambition earns CEO of small Clearfield business a big award

CLEARFIELD -- When setting up her own company nine years ago, growing into a business with nearly 200 employees and 2011 revenue of $18.9 million was not what Karen Woodbury set out to do.

However, now that her company, Woodbury Technologies, has become just that, she has been recognized as the Utah State Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

"I didn't have any grandiose ideas or big plans. What I had in mind was on a smaller scale," said Woodbury, 55, CEO of the company. "I don't know what happened, but I do have an ambitious streak. I just kept working hard trying to get new business, and ... it grew incrementally."

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II has appointed the Duchess of Cornwall to the highest female rank in the Royal Victorian Order, Buckingham Palace said Monday.

Bountiful recognizes local teenager

Daphne O’Rullian was honored with a volunteer service award recently by the city council.

O’Rullian, who was crowned as the 2011 Miss Utah Junior National Teenager, was cited for her service in the community. The Bountiful teenager has been particularly active in volunteer efforts at the Boys and Girls club in Salt Lake City.

OGDEN — For a sixth consecutive year, the Corporation for National and Community Service has named Weber State University to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service.

The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement.

USU researchers recognized for work on dementia

LOGAN — Researchers at Utah State University who are part of the internationally recognized Cache County Study on Memory in Aging have been recognized by the Utah Alzheimer’s Association.

The group, involving researchers in USU’s Colleges of Education and Human Services, Agriculture and Science, received the ALEXA “A Lifetime of Exceptional Achievement” Award at a gala chaired by Lt. Gov. Greg Bell.

Red Cross honors local heroes

OGDEN — In times of crisis, there are ordinary people who step up to help others without looking for reward or praise.

Some run into a burning building to rescue loved ones, others gather to pull victims from a car in a freezing river, while some just wait with a fatally injured woman until help arrives.

The American Red Cross of Northern Utah honored community members who displayed acts of courage and selflessness at the 2012 Heroes Award Event Breakfast on Wednesday at Union Station.
