Avalanche center warns of considerable danger in N. Utah mountains

OGDEN — There is still a considerable to high chance for avalanches in the Northern Utah mountains, warns the Utah Avalanche Center.

The center issued an avalanche watch in light of the rapidly warming temperatures and direct sunlight expected through Tuesday. The weather easily creates unstable and dangerous avalanche conditions on all slopes, particularly on steep terrain facing east, west and south, according to the center.

The watch does not include ski areas or highways normally kept safe through avalanche control.

Warning issued after Utah avalanches

SALT LAKE CITY -- A warning has been posted for many of Utah's mountains after avalanches killed a snowboarder and broke the leg of a snowmobiler.

Snowmobiler escapes slide; more dangerous conditions await

MONTE CRISTO — A snowmobiler caught in an avalanche Friday, at the start of what forecasters expect to be a dangerous weekend, escaped with just an injured leg.

Though avalanches caused by skiers, snowboarders or snowmobilers have been sparse in Northern Utah, high winds and heavy snow settling on top of weak snow this week led to a slide.

The unidentified man was with three other snowmobilers on Whiskey Hill, just outside of the Monte Cristo trailhead on Highway 39, when he triggered an avalanche halfway up a steep slope around 11 a.m., said Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center.

3 skiers killed in Wash. avalanche; 4th survived

STEVENS PASS, Wash. -- Expert skiers caught in a weekend avalanche were equipped with safety devices and kept track of each other as they strayed beyond the boundaries of a popular Washington ski resort.

One skier caught in Wash. avalanche was saved by new safety device

Three skiers died Sunday in a Washington avalanche. Another was saved by a new safety device called a flotation air bag -- equipment tucked inside a skier's backpack, ready for deployment in case of an avalanche.

Deadly avalanches struck in an instant; 4 killed

STEVENS PASS, Wash. -- Her buddy shouted "Avalanche!" but when things started sliding, it felt to professional skier Elyse Saugstad like just a tiny rush of loose snow beneath her skis.

In an instant the weight and pressure grew so immense that she rocketed down the slope, banging into trees and rolling upside down.

Ogden Valley ski resorts cleared for heliports

OGDEN -- Guests at Ogden Valley ski resorts soon may have a chance to go quickly from sitting by the fireplace to hitting untouched powder under the whirl of helicopter blades.

Experts: Exercise caution on snow

OGDEN ¬-- As Utah ski resorts anticipate the arrival of the big storm they've been desperately waiting for, experts want to remind eager snow junkies -- especially those who plan to venture into the backcountry -- to be extra careful.

After an unusually dry start to winter, as much as a foot and a half of fresh powder is expected to blanket Northern Utah's mountains over the next several days.

While that's good news for the ski industry, it also dramatically increases the risk of avalanches, which account for nearly two-thirds of natural hazard-related deaths in the state.

Avalanche safety class set in Ogden

OGDEN -- The community is invited to a free avalanche awareness class at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30, at Slackwater Pub and Pizzeria, 1895 Washington Blvd.

The class is an effort by the National Ski Patrol and the Avalanche Forecast Center of Utah.
