Gun-control backers target N.H. senator who voted against background check bill

WARREN, N.H. — The contentious political fight over gun control moved into the White Mountains of New Hampshire on Tuesday as gun-control activists began to focus on Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., as a prime target in their effort to revive their push for stricter gun laws.

Job hunter with DUI record needs persistence

I received the following email regarding last week’s column, “Having trouble finding a job”:

“Your points are dead-on and precisely what I have been doing in my job search, I’ve spent $2,000 to ensure I’m out there for people to see and have utilized professionals for content and posting networks (such as LinkedIn) but to no avail. I’m on month 7 in seeking employment and have not had one interview with a company. I’m 52 with experiences most comment as very ‘impressive’ but then add they’re pursuing other candidates. … My only conclusion is with a background check they will readily see I have 3 DUIs and was in a county jail for 120 days.

Centerville adds background probe to work with kids

CENTERVILLE -- The city has finalized procedures to conduct criminal background checks on employees and volunteers who work with minors.

FBI ran record 16.4 million gun background checks in 2011

Criminal background checks, required before guns can be purchased, rose to a record 16.4 million last year -- up by more than 2 million over 2010.
