County unveils plans for three-day festival

FARMINGTON -- Someone who sings like Neil Diamond, and another act that sings Beach Boys' songs, are part of the festivities being packed into the 6th annual Antelope Island Stampede Festival.

The three-day event will be held on the island Sept. 2-4, Labor Day weekend.

The cost to attend the event is $15 per carload, which includes the state park fee, Davis County's causeway fee. It allows entry to all festival entertainment.

When the wind blows, the sky will be painted with pieces of art in myriad colors, shapes and sizes -- all attached to a dangling string below. Those flashes of color are meant to inspire happiness and festivity, especially this year as a celebration is planned around them.
The Antelope Island Balloon and Kite Stampede runs today through Sunday. Kites are new this year, and promise to bring professional kite flyers and hobbyists to put on aerial demonstrations with their huge, intricate kites.
The event also includes live entertainment, art and craft vendors, tethered balloon rides, balloon glows at 8:30 p.m. each night, launches at 6 p.m. each night and at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and kite flying and building demonstrations.

SYRACUSE -- Camille Bybee's imagination took flight Wednesday as the 7-year-old watched her school principals and teachers ascend the morning sky in a 70-foot-tall hot air balloon behind Syracuse Elementary School.
"I thought the balloon looked like a round ice cube with different colored juices in it," Camille said.
"If I could ride in it, I'd go for miles and see houses and cars and schools and animals."

Finally, a roar of flame sends one balloon skyward. A heat wave warms onlookers braving the chilly morning.
A few minutes later, the sky is filled with balloons drifting gently on the breeze.

Balloon fest booth permit pulled; Powder Mountain Town opponents' group deflated

POWDER MOUNTAIN -- Members of a group opposed to the incorporation of Powder Mountain as a town are feeling deflated because they won't be allowed to have a booth at this weekend's Ogden Valley Balloon & Artist Festival.
The Citizens' Rights Committee was initially promised about two weeks ago by organizers of the festival, running Friday through Sunday at Wolf Creek Resort in Eden, that it could set up an informational booth at the event, said committee member Larry Zini.
However, on Tuesday, permission for the booth was withdrawn, said Zini, who is concerned officials with Powder Mountain resort, one of the festival's sponsors, may have used their influence to get the Citizens' Rights Committee booted.
"Something clearly changed," he said Wednesday.
