Justice is supposed to be impartial, but court system is limited

Justice is blind. The iconic statue of the goddess shows Justice, her scales swaying, the sword at her side ready to strike and her eyes masked by a blindfold. The scales are there to represent the balancing of the facts and the law, the sword for the punishment and the blindfold for impartiality.

Sex ed bill goes against philosophy of Utah code: Be prepared

Be prepared. While this motto works for Scouts, the law enforces preparedness by requiring classes and education that must take place in order to access various legal remedies and privileges.

House Bill 363, which is awaiting Gov. Gary Herbert’s signature (or veto), would prohibit local school boards from educating our students on the full spectrum of reproductive health, harshly limiting the discussion of sex to abstinence and within marriage. (Note: Herbert vetoed the sex ed bill late Friday night, after this column was written and posted.)

After sunset, the streets of downtown Stockton, California, are empty as seen February 28, 2012. The city has among the highest crime rates in the state. As cash-strapped cities up and down the state demand concessions from employees, the police union in nearly bankrupt Stockton is fighting hard to keep the fiscal crisis from breaking its contract. Stockton, Calif. could become largest city to file bankruptcy

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The name painted in the plate-glass window, "Bradley's," has a martini glass standing in for the "y."

The late-afternoon sun has turned the other windows into mirrors. Deep inside, in bar-appropriate shadow, patrons rest their drinks on 100-year-old mahogany and, as in many a neighborhood pub, consider hopes gone astray.

Across the way are a marina without boats and parking garages without cars. There are few people outside on downtown sidewalks.

This is what it looks like when a city is close to going under.

Film and Twinkies: Reports of their death exaggerated

OK, write this down: Twinkies are not going away. Neither is Kodak film.

Photo finish? Former trailblazer Kodak files for Chapter 11

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Is Kodak's moment past?

The glory days when Eastman Kodak Co. ruled the world of film photography lasted for over a century. Then came a stunning reversal of fortune: cutthroat competition from Japanese firms in the 1980s and a seismic shift to the digital technology it pioneered but couldn't capitalize on. Now comes a wistful worry that this icon of American business is edging toward extinction.

Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday, raising the specter that the 132-year-old trailblazer could become the most storied casualty of a digital age that has whipped up a maelstrom of economic, social and technological change.
