Obama-Romney showdown starts with a harsh tone

MENDENHALL, Pa. — The 2012 presidential general election has begun. It won’t be pretty.

Obama nominates Hill commander for promotion, new post

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — The highest-ranking commander on base is likely about to be promoted and given a new home.

President Barack Obama has nominated Maj. Gen. Andrew E. Busch, commander of Hill Air Force Base’s Ogden Air Logistics Center, to be vice commander at Air Force Materiel Command. If the U.S. Senate approves the nomination, Busch will be on his way to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

“It’s an honor to be nominated for this position,” Busch said. “My nomination is still pending Senate confirmation, and the exact timing of my departure is unknown. In the meantime, I continue to be amazed by the professionalism of the men and women in the Air Logistics Center. I’ve enjoyed my three years at Hill and the relationships I’ve developed. I look forward to my continued service in the Air Force.”

Marking another year with tea and joy and a white stone

Lewis Carroll, the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," marked wonderful days in his diary “with a white stone” — an ancient Roman tradition — so let me say that Sunday, the final day of my 63rd year on the planet, is marked with a brilliant white stone indeed.

I got to spend it with my gracious and lovely granddaughter, Alice, who is almost 2.

College, where you learn to really think about what you do

Like all teachers on the college level, Adrienne Gillespie is both dismayed by and thrilled with her students. Thrilled because some are wonders: Bright. Aggressive. Able to leap tall concepts with a single mental bound. They know why they need an education. They mean to get one.

These are the students whose papers get graded last. Why? Every professor needs a treat.

She’s dismayed because some students are ticket punchers, people who “just say, ‘Give me my degree. I just need a degree. Why do you want me to take these other classes?’ ”

Obama touts fuel-efficient technology as way to reduce US dependence on foreign oil

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday to tout fuel-efficient technology as one way to reduce energy costs and the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

Utah’s Lee divides Congress; more federal land debate

I am sad to see Maine’s Olympia Snowe leaving the U.S. Senate.

Utah is not Maine, so normally I wouldn’t comment on Snowe, but I can’t get over the nagging thought that Snowe, a well-known moderate, is leaving because Utah’s voters elected Sen. Mike Lee two years ago.

In time of national trial, the brave — or stupid — step forward

“Even though Mitt Romney has regained momentum as the front-runner in the GOP race with wins in Arizona and Michigan, many within the Republican Party are ready to pull the rip cord and find someone else.”

— news item

Mitt may have Utah locked up, but he’s looking dicey elsewhere. There are more questions about President Barack Obama’s birth. It may be time to throw my hat into the ring and save the nation from the loonies.

Or at least introduce a different loon. Whatever.

Patent law in the United States continues to evolve

Patents have existed throughout the history of the United States because of their value. In Colonial America, inventions were safeguarded by the governing bodies of the colonies.

After independence but before the adoption of the Constitution, the protection of inventions was handled by the states.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah

Hatch vows to defend Hill Air Force Base from cuts, closure

Making sure Hill Air Force Base is not a casualty to budget cuts and upcoming base closures his top priority, says Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

In this Feb. 1, 2012 file photo, President Barack Obama speaks in Falls Church, Va. Month by month, the U.S. job market is regaining its health. According to reports Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, so many jobs are being added that the unemployment rate has dropped for five straight months. At 8.3 percent, it’s at a three-year low. Whether the job market actually feels stronger, though, depends on your perspective. The presidential election is sure to be determined, in part, by how Americans interpret the shifts in the job market. Perhaps no one has more reason to cheer the improving job numbers than Obama. His re-election hopes rest heavily on whether most voters will agree that the economy has improved on his watch.

Obama says he deserves re-election, job’s not done

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he deserves re-election, despite the nation’s economic troubles.

In this image from contributed video, Bryan Farnsworth, 49, is seen in an ankle-length tie-dyed skirt with a pink shirt, blazer and tie during a Saturday night Lincoln Day Dinner in Tremonton. The declared candidate for Congress in Utah’s 1st District, who told the audience he is bipolar, was accompanied by a dog. He may be cited for misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct because a Utah Highway Patrol trooper was injured while escorting the agitated Farnsworth from the hall. Also, Farnsworth made comments about the president’s military policies and called Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop traitors.

Universities question Obama tuition plan

WASHINGTON — Fuzzy math, Illinois State University’s president called it. “Political theater of the worst sort,” said the University of Washington’s head.

Dems: Romney is easier jobs target than Gingrich

WASHINGTON -- Conventional wisdom, supported by polls, maintains that Mitt Romney would be a tougher opponent than Newt Gingrich against President Barack Obama.

But one factor keeps Democrats from salivating over Gingrich's rise in the Republican presidential race: Romney may present a fatter target on jobs, the issue expected to dominate the 2012 contest.
