'Barefoot Bandit's' film rights sold for $1 million

SEATTLE -- Colton Harris-Moore has had a lot of labels attached to him -- "Barefoot Bandit" most notably, but also via a T-shirt that bears the felonious youth's image with the words "Momma Tried." Now he'll be able add: "subject of a major motion picture."

The film studio 20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to Harris-Moore's tumultuous life story for "a tad over" $1 million, lawyers said, money that is to be used to repay victims of Harris-Moore's crime spree that ranged from the San Juan Islands in Washington to his dramatic arrest after a high-speed boat chase in the Bahamas.

Plea deal near for ’Barefoot Bandit,’ lawyer says

SEATTLE — The attorney representing Colton Harris-Moore said Thursday he is “within a day” of finalizing a plea agreement that will satisfy the dozens of jurisdictions where the so-called “Barefoot Bandit” is believed to have committed crimes during his years as a fugitive.

“A draft is on the table,” said lawyer John Henry Browne.

One of the final hurdles is an agreement over what will come of any money that Colton-Moore will make from movie and book deals about his escapades.

Barefoot Bandit pleads not guilty

SEATTLE -- Colton Harris-Moore, the teenage "Barefoot Bandit" who was the subject of a two-year manhunt, pleaded not guilty Thursday morning to five federal charges in U.S. District Court in Seattle.

Magistrate Judge Mary Alice Theiler scheduled Harris-Moore's trial for Jan. 18 before U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones.

Afterward, Harris-Moore's attorney, John Henry Browne, said he hopes a plea deal can be struck that would limit the 19-year-old's time behind bars. He suggested that Harris-Moore's family might be interested in selling his story and using the proceeds to pay restitution to the dozens of victims.
