PROVO — While bringing a gun to a bear fight may seem like a solid way to win, experts say the gun largely provides a false sense of security — and would be similar to trying to shoot, and stop, a small car careening toward you at speeds of up to 35 mph.

BOISE, Idaho -- An Idaho elk hunter who apparently stumbled across a bear's resting spot Saturday was hospitalized after the animal bit him and broke his right arm, officials said.

A 39-year-old hunter killed by a wounded grizzly bear yelled out to draw the 400-pound male bear toward him in an effort to keep it from attacking his young hunting partner, the man’s family said.

MOUNTAIN GREEN -- Bloodhounds are on the trail of a bear that snatched a goat from a backyard in the Monte Verde area Monday night.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- Investigators have been searching a swath of Yellowstone National Park by air and foot as they try to determine whether a man whose body was found on a backcountry trail was the victim of a grizzly bear attack.

Rangers and wildlife biologists hoping to find clues as to how the man died continued to comb a central portion of the park Saturday on foot. He was found a day earlier by two hikers on Mary Mountain Trail, which runs northeast of the iconic Old Faithful geyser.

OGDEN -- Water isn't the only thing coming down from the mountaintops these days.

Black bears that recently came out of hibernation would normally be feeding in Utah's high alpine meadows this time of year, but because of an abnormally wet and cool spring, those areas are still buried under deep snow.

As a result, hungry bears are heading to lower elevations in search of food.

BILLINGS, Mont. -- Looking healthier but still skittish from their wild upbringing, three orphaned grizzly bears that took part in a fatal campground rampage outside Yellowstone National Park made their public debut Friday at a Montana zoo.

A dozen preschoolers watched as the young bears -- nicknamed Dolly, Loulou and Koda -- nosed around a two-acre outdoor compound surrounded by high-voltage electric fencing.

Dolly and Loulou eventually inched close enough to get a good look at the children. But Koda, described by his ZooMontana keepers as "the reticent one," kept his distance, ducking into the bears' heated enclosure whenever someone made a sudden move.
