Girls basketball: Bear River falls 47-36 in 3-A tourney

ST. GEORGE - Baby steps.

This wasn't Bear River's year to reach the pinnacle of girls' basketball, but their first state 3-A tournament in nine years has given them valuable experience for future teams.

The Bears couldn't climb out of an early hole on Friday morning and dropped a 47-36 decision to Region 10 champion Juan Diego, knocking them out of the consolation bracket and sending them home with two straight losses. But Bears' coach Van Park will never call this season a disappointment.

Bears can't solve Snow Canyon in 3-A quarterfinals

ST. GEORGE -- It was a tall order to begin with, but the Bear River Bears showed little resistance against the highly touted Snow Canyon Warriors in the state 3-A girls basketball quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Dixie State College.

Girls basketball: Bears nab victory in dramatic fashion

GARLAND -- Finally, Da Bears have won a state 3-A playoff game.

After Delta, which took third at last year's 3-A tournament, missed two double-bonus free throws with 14.9 seconds remaining while clinging to a one-point lead, the door was ajar for Region 11 runner-up Bear River.

Prep wrestling: Bears' early promise dissolves at state

OREM -- When 11 Bear River wrestlers claimed opening-round victories on Friday in the state 3-A wrestling championships, hopes soared for the Bears faithful for a surprise showing at the tournament.

But only three of the Bears advance through the evening quarterfinals at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center.

Prep basketball: Trojans dig deep to down Bears

MORGAN -- Lively, energetic, passionate. All are apropos terms used to describe this year's Morgan Trojans.

Coach Jim Wiscombe has another label: blue-collar. That one might have been the most fitting on Friday night as the hard-working Trojans knocked off bitter rival Bear River 64-51 and ensured themselves the No. 1 seed from Region 11 in the upcoming state 3-A playoffs.

Prep basketball: Royals no match for Lakers' stingy defense

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The matchup of the Royals' state 4-A leading offense (56.20 points per game) versus a Bonneville defense allowing just 36.47 ppg -- No. 2 in the 4-A ranks by only .04 -- was a no-contest.

Despite a venue change Thursday, the league-leading Lakers spanked Roy High 54-22 to remain undefeated at Region 5's midpoint.

If Bonneville (13-3 overall, 5-0 league) is to capture its first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season, it will have to do it away from home. The Lakers, who swept their seventh consecutive victory and are 8-2 spanning their last 10 games, play four of their final five on the road.

Prep basketball: Ben Lomond keeps cruising

OGDEN -- Patience has its virtues, which is why the Scots are in contention for their first league boys basketball title since 1986-87, and have already surpassed last season's eight victories.

Running its half-court offense to near perfection Wednesday, while shooting a blistering 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the floor, paved the way to Ben Lomond's 49-37 Region 11 win over Da Bears.
