Prep basketball: Scots top Tigers for second in Region 11

OGDEN -- Junior guard Sterling Brandley scored a game-high 16 points and three Scots hit double-digit scoring to lift Ben Lomond 62-50 over Ogden at Phil Russell court on Wednesday.

The win solidifies Ben Lomond as Region 11's second place team at 9-2 just behind the undefeated Morgan Trojans (11-0).

Girls basketball: Trojans finish perfect region slate

MORGAN -- It was a subdued celebration, but the Morgan Trojans cut down the nets on Tuesday night after knocking off Ogden 46-34 and finishing the Region 11 schedule with a perfect 12-0 record. The win marks two straight years of unblemished league play and Morgan's fourth region championship in a row.

But the Trojans (17-4 overall) weren't exactly thrilled with how their regular season ended. Numerous turnovers, too many missed layups and cold- and flu-like symptoms for half a dozen Morgan players resulted in a game that was too close for comfort. But the motivated Tigers had a lot to do with that.

"We've got some sick girls," Morgan coach Brad Matthews said. "Practice the last couple of days has been rough and some of them were having a hard time breathing. But that's still no excuse for bad passes and turnovers. Ogden had a good game plan. We got out of what we do partly because of what Ogden was doing."

Prep sports: Mountain Crest swims to strong showing

PROVO -- Skyline swam away with the state 4-A swimming titles on Saturday, outpointing the rest of field in impressive fashion at BYU's pool.

After the two-day event, the Skyline girls tallied 458.5 points, followed by Woods Cross 9235) and Olympus (211).

Mountain Crest was fourth, followed by Logan and Sky View, with Box Elder 13th.

Utah drill team state titles up for grabs

The best drill teams in regions 1, 5, 6, 11 and 17 will take aim at state championship titles this weekend at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

The 5-A and 4-A championships will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday, the 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams take to the floor from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Defending 4-A champion Bountiful will face strong challenges from 2011 runner-up Bonneville, as well as Mountain Crest, Box Elder, Sky View and Logan from Region 5, as well as Clearfield out of Region 6.

Prep basketball: Royals no match for Lakers' stingy defense

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The matchup of the Royals' state 4-A leading offense (56.20 points per game) versus a Bonneville defense allowing just 36.47 ppg -- No. 2 in the 4-A ranks by only .04 -- was a no-contest.

Despite a venue change Thursday, the league-leading Lakers spanked Roy High 54-22 to remain undefeated at Region 5's midpoint.

If Bonneville (13-3 overall, 5-0 league) is to capture its first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season, it will have to do it away from home. The Lakers, who swept their seventh consecutive victory and are 8-2 spanning their last 10 games, play four of their final five on the road.

Prep basketball: Ben Lomond keeps cruising

OGDEN -- Patience has its virtues, which is why the Scots are in contention for their first league boys basketball title since 1986-87, and have already surpassed last season's eight victories.

Running its half-court offense to near perfection Wednesday, while shooting a blistering 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the floor, paved the way to Ben Lomond's 49-37 Region 11 win over Da Bears.

Girls basketball: Blazzard helps Trojans slaughter Scots

MORGAN -- If you score the first 33 points of the game, chances are pretty good you're going to win.

That's precisely what Morgan did against Ben Lomond on Tuesday night. The Scots couldn't manage a single basket until midway through the second quarter when Taylor Hughes finally hit a free throw to put the Scots on the board.

Prep notes: Royal softball standouts will sign together

Pool heats up as prep elite vie for supremacy

During the next week, swim pools around the state will be echoing with the cheers and tears of Top of Utah high school swimmers as they battle for state qualifications and region titles at a handful of championship meets.

With Viewmont tucked into a Salt Lake region this year, the Region 1 forecast calls for a Weber High surge for both the boys and girls titles. They'll be led by top performers Elizabeth Tomon, Erin Nordhill, Brighton West, Rachel De Young, Mary Williams, and Rachel Wilding for the girls; and Chandler Ward, Tim Romney, Shea Smith, Drake Mendelson, Tim Romney, John Brasher, Josh Nguyen, and Jon Vu for the boys.

Prep basketball: Scots rise above Tigers at home

OGDEN -- Ben Lomond High forwards Sterling Brandley and Josh Hardin combined for 24 points and hauled in 13 rebounds as the Scots buried Ogden 45-37 in front of an earth-shaking crowd in Friday night's Region 11 boys basketball action.

The decibels hit nearly unbearable in Ben Lomond's gym as Brandley hit his only free throw of the night, icing the game just seconds before the buzzer.

Prep basketball: Buzzer-beater gives Scots victory

OGDEN -- Tied at 35 with 20 seconds left Ben Lomond brought the ball down and tried to get inside to forward Josh Hardin for a close shot or at least a foul.

Hardin was covered, but standing just beyond the arc was a wide open Nate Watkins.

The buzzer sounded as the ball hit the right side of the rim, the backboard and finally fell through the net.
