Today’s the day to bike to work

FARMINGTON — Bike riders from across the country are being encouraged to get on their bikes and commute to and from work today as part of National Bike-to-Work Day.

Contenders find Antelope Island a picturesque setting for cycling race

ANTELOPE ISLAND — Among the racers talking about their experience on the first day of the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, one superlative kept popping up.

Beautiful.

Friday’s time trial races at Antelope Island featured sunny skies, ideal temperatures in the low 60s, and plenty of praise for the 21-mile course along the east side of the island.

Want to avoid injury exercising outdoors? Experts offer advice

OGDEN — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports nearly 5,000 people die each year and more than 78,000 are injured in traffic accidents involving pedestrians and those out exercising.

It’s that time of year when more people take their exercising outdoors, whether it’s riding a bicycle or running and walking.

Officials peddle Ogden as new cycling center

OGDEN — City officials hope to make Ogden the cycling capital of the United States, but they say the key to getting there is nearly 7,000 miles away.

Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell and City Business Development Director Steve Fishburn recently spent a week in Taiwan, pitching Taiwanese bicycle manufacturers on the benefits of setting up shop in Ogden.

Representatives from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the Economic Development Corporation of Utah also made the trip.

Repairs planned for bridge where LOTOJA cyclist plunged to his death

 

JACKSON, Wyo. -- Repairs are planned for a bridge where a bicyclist competing in a race crashed and fell about 35 feet to his death into the Snake River.

Ogden mayor in Taiwan, pushing city as premier cycling city

OGDEN — Mayor Mike Caldwell was nearly 7,000 miles away from his constituency Friday, hoping to sell Taiwanese bicycle manufacturers on the benefits of setting up shop in Ogden.

Caldwell is in Taiwan with Ogden City Business Development Director Steve Fishburn and Todd Brightwell from the Economic Development Corporation of Utah.

The trio are getting an up-close and personal look at the country’s bicycle industry and trying to pitch Ogden as a premier cycle city to companies at the Taipei International Cycle Show.

Wyoming doesn’t count cycling fatalities; a closer look at LOTOJA 2012 death

JACKSON, Wyo. — Robert Verhaaren pedaled into Wyoming on U.S. 25 near Palisades Reservoir on Sept. 8 as part of the LOTOJA bicycle race.

The Arizona racer rode past Alpine, up U.S. 89 and started across the Snake River at the bridge at Horse Creek, about 190 miles into the 206-mile course from Logan, Utah, to Teton Village.

There, among a pack of riders, his bike careened into the bridge guardrail, launching him over a 29-inch-high banister and down 56 feet to the shallow edge of the river below.

Fat bikes are gaining traction around the mountain west.

You may have seen one on the trails and done a double take after you realized that the trails are still covered in snow. After all, this is when people should be traveling on skis or snowshoes, not cruising down the trails on a mountain bike.

“I never really rode a bike in the snow. You’d walk in it, You’d ski in it, but riding a bike in the snow is pretty new,” said Gabriel Chiafre, of his new experience riding a fat bike.

Sheriff’s office to donate bikes to Bicycle Collective of Utah

OGDEN — A deal with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office will give the Bicycle Collective of Utah more bikes to sell or donate to the community.

Centennial Trail in Weber County almost complete with recent paving

WEST HAVEN — Those who love Utah’s wilderness, and a step back into history to go along with it, may want to explore Weber County’s best-kept secret.

The portion of the Centennial Trail through West Haven and Marriott-Slaterville is a 31⁄2-mile stretch between the two cities. With the recent paving of the final mile, the trail is nearly completed.

The Centennial Trail is a 27-mile trail in Weber County that follows the Ogden and Weber rivers and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail connecting Ogden and Weber canyons.

Bicycle component manufacturer to bring 324 jobs to Utah

OGDEN — ENVE Composites, an Ogden-based maker of high-end bicycle components, will expand its local manufacturing facility to bring 324 more jobs to Utah using tax incentives from the state.

Many of those jobs, CEO Sarah Lehman said, could be from China, where the company currently makes parts.
