Walk, bike to work? Survey focuses on smoothing the way

SALT LAKE CITY — If your commute to work involves using your own two legs, now is the time for your voice to be heard.

Through the rest of October, Utah residents have the opportunity to participate in a statewide walk/bike barriers survey.

The survey aims to help its sponsoring agencies — the Wasatch Front Regional Council, Mountainland Association of Governments, Utah Department of Transportation, and Utah Transit Authority — better understand specific hindrances to walking and biking along the Wasatch Front.

I rode my bicycle to work the day I wrote this column

As I write this, Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell and the city’s resident bicycle expert, Josh Jones, are in Minneapolis seeing how a city with worse winters than Utah’s embraces bicycles as transportation.

Man attacks driver after truck drags bicycle trailer carrying child

ROY — A 2-year-old escaped with minor abrasions after the baby trailer he was riding in was dragged about 15 feet and ended up under a pickup truck following a traffic accident Friday evening.

Bystanders and a Roy police officer who witnessed the accident lifted the truck so the baby trailer could be pulled out.

The child had minor scrapes to his face and injuries to his right hand, said Police Sgt. Curtis Gibson. “I’m amazed he wasn’t severely injured.”

Retired dentist injured in LOTOJA race out of intensive care in Ogden

OGDEN — A bicycle racer is out of the intensive care unit after suffering injuries during the LOTOJA race on Saturday.

Retired dentist Douglas Cottle, 62, fractured his face and the tip of a finger during the race from Logan to Jackson Hole, Wyo.

He is recuperating at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

Man plans 8,500-mile bike ride to ’fattest’ cities

LANSING, Mich. — A central Michigan man who shed about 130 pounds over the past year by riding a bike is gearing up for an 8,500-mile ride to visit U.S. cities that are battling obesity problems.

HELP ON WHEELS: Kids with parents at Hill enjoy donated bikes

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Staff Sgt. Andrew Mowry had been on the lookout for an affordable bicycle for stepson Kaleb.

“He outgrew his old bike,” said Mowry, an engine maintenance instructor at Hill Air Force Base. “We had been looking, but everything was too pricey.”

Kaleb Bruessel, 6, was one of 74 children in 52 families selected to get shiny new bicycles on Saturday courtesy of the local employees and interns of Northrop Grumman, a military security contractor with its Utah offices at Hill.

Bike enthusiasts gather for Tour of Utah kickoff

OGDEN — Monday was a great day to be a bike “geek” in Ogden, according to Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell.

He was speaking to a full Ogden Amphitheater crowd, there to greet the participants in the 2012 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, which gets under way at 10:15 a.m. today in Ogden with a 131-mile road race.

Witnesses: Pickup driver hit boy on bike, drove off

OGDEN — Police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that struck a 6-year-old boy Thursday and then fled the scene.

The accident happened in the 2100 block of Adams Avenue about 5 p.m., said Police Lt. Scott Conley.

Ready to roll? Clinton class covers prepping bikes, making repairs

CLINTON — “Get that dusty old bike down from the hook, dust it off and let’s get it ready to hit the road,” says Austin Hawks, a Clinton resident who teaches Agriculture Education at Clearfield High School and repairs bikes on the side.

At a recent Clinton City Community Enhancement Program class, Hawks demonstrated simple ways to “get your bike ready to roll in no time.”
