‘Fighting Sioux’ letters find new home in North Dakota

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The letters that spelled “Home of the Fighting Sioux” on the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks may soon appear along a stretch of North Dakota Highway 18 near Pisek.

The Grand Forks Herald reported Monday that Mike Dvorak entered the winning bid of $8,000 for the letters in an online auction. Dvorak owns a farm near Pisek.

Dvorak, 47, said he is building a house and thinking about putting the letters on top of the house and lighting them.

Wildcats to push softball doubleheader to Wednesday

OGDEN -- Due to Weber State’s hosting of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship game on Tuesday night, the Wildcats' have re-scheduled their non-conference softball doubleheader with in-state rival Utah Valley to Wednesday. The doubleheader was originally set for Tuesday.

First pitch Wednesday is still set for 2 p.m., with the second game to follow at approximately 4 p.m., at Wildcat Softball Field.

Wildcats Berry earns NABC All-District 6 first team honors

OGDEN — Weber State junior Davion Berry earned All-District honors Tuesday as he was named to the National  Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 6 first team. The team is selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC. 

Berry, a native of Oakland, Calif., earned First Team Big All-Conference honors and was named Big Sky newcomer of the year after leading the Wildcats this season. Berry has started all 34 games for the Wildcats this season, heading into Wednesday’s CIT quarterfinal game. 

Wildcats drop softball series finale with UND

OGDEN — Too many mistakes.

The Weber State University softball team suffered through an error-filled afternoon on Saturday, dropping its series finale against North Dakota 11-4 in Big Sky Conference action at Wildcat Softball Field.

The Wildcats (2-1 Big Sky, 4-21 overall) pounded out a series-high 10 hits, but committed five errors and stranded nine base runners in the loss.

Wildcats jump into Big Sky softball play Friday

OGDEN — The Weber State softball team hopes to put its best foot forward Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats kick off their 18-game Big Sky Conference softball season at Wildcat Softball Field against North Dakota. 

First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, followed by a second game at approximately 4 p.m. The teams will meet again at noon on Saturday for the series finale. 

Weber State chasing school wins record, will host Air Force on Saturday in CIT

 

OGDEN -- With an eye on posting its best win total in school history, Weber State will host Air Force in the second round of the Collegeinsider.com Tournament this Saturday.

The Wildcats will take on the Falcons at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.

OGDEN — The only lingering effects from the Wildcats’ heartbreaking loss to Montana in the Big Sky Conference tournament championship game appeared to be a desire to bounce back and put the past behind them.

Syracuse seeded 4th in East, to face Montana

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Syracuse has earned the fourth seed in the East Regional and will face Big Sky champion Montana in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday.

In their final Big East appearance before heading to the ACC next season, the 19th-ranked Orange (26-9) wilted against Louisville’s relentless pressure defense and squandered a 16-point advantage during a 78-61 defeat in the conference championship game on Saturday night.

MISSOULA, Mont. — Twice this season at Dahlberg Arena, Montana had to wait out a desperation 3-point try from Weber State at the buzzer, and twice the Grizzlies celebrated.

Dodge ball: Weber State rallies to defeat North Dakota in Big Sky semifinals

MISSOULA, Mont. — Weber State came into Dahlberg Arena before its Big Sky Conference semifinal game with North Dakota wearing purple warm-up shirts with “Rise To The Occasion” printed on the front.

The Wildcats took the slogan literally.

With WSU trailing by 12 points early in the second half to a UND team that was outshooting the best shooters in the country, freshman forward Joel Bolomboy rose up for three straight soaring slam dunks that lifted WSU back into a game it eventually won 76-74.

Davion Berry rose to the occasion to tie his career-high with 25 points as Weber State survived the semifinal slugfest against North Dakota to win its 13th straight game and advance to the Big Sky Tournament championship game.

Big Sky quarterfinals: Weber State dispatches NAU by 26 points

MISSOULA, Mont. — On the first day of the Big Sky Conference Tournament, Weber State senior shooting guard Scott Bamforth’s 1-year-old son was chosen from the crowd to play a halftime contest involving giant inflatable dice.

Little Kingzton rolled a one on his second try when he needed at least a two to win.

It was the only unlucky break for the Wildcats on Thursday.

WSU softball drops close game to UCSB; preps for home opener on Wednesday

LAKEWOOD, Calif. — The Weber State University softball team dropped a hard-fought battle with UC Santa Barbara in its final game of the Long Beach State Invitational on Sunday morning.

The Gauchos scored broke a 1-1 tie with runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and then held on for a 4-2 victory over the Wildcats at Mayfair Park.
