Impacts of 9/11 far-reaching -- and local

OGDEN -- All Utahns go through intense security at the airport because of the terrorist attacks 10 years ago Sunday, but how many know:

  •  Why one museum's volunteers had to have background checks before they could show visitors the displays?
  •  Why there are so many Saudi students in Utah and so few Iranians?
  • Why the books you check out at the library could still get you in trouble?

Give us a break ... who else has a crime-fighting blimp but Ogden?

"Crime Fighting Blimp."

It's either the coolest band name this side of "Wolf Blitzer and the Vowel Movements," or the most righteous law-enforcement tool since the invention of the rubber bullet.

Earlier this year, the Ogden Police Department became the envy of 19th-century constabularies everywhere when officials announced they'd be enlisting a blimp to patrol the skies above the city. Plans call for a 50-odd-foot unmanned airship, equipped with surveillance cameras, navigational equipment and a payload of advanced weaponry capable of raining down terror on inner-city criminals.

Ogden blimp may be patrolling by Christmas

OGDEN -- The city's planned crime-fighting blimp could begin patrolling Ogden's airspace in time for Christmas, the police chief says.

Goodyear to replace blimps with newer, faster zeppelins

LOS ANGELES -- The 33-acre grassy airfield in Carson, Calif., doesn't appear much bigger than a postage stamp when pilot Jon Conrad begins steering the 12,840-pound Goodyear blimp in for a landing.
