Ogden bodybuilding team hits the big time at USA competition

OGDEN — They say they’re just normal, ordinary people, but the members of the Body Evolution Team are champions in more ways than one.

Described as having some of the best-sculpted bodies in the country, the 16-member team stole the show at the Team USA Natural Bodybuilding Championships in Las Vegas last month.

Body Evolution founders Jason and Heather Hansen were among the winners. Heather won the overall USA classic figure title; Jason won the overall USA men’s physique title. Altogether, the team won more than 32 trophies, including nine overall, qualifying the team to move on to the World Natural Olympia Competition to be held next month in Reno.

“This is big — really big,” Jason Hansen said.

Joseph Perez takes this dietary supplement containing DMAA several times a day, including right before his workout.

Pressure to ban dietary supplement DMAA builds

CHICAGO -- Joseph Perez used to gear up for his intense workouts by taking ephedra-based dietary supplements. When they were banned because of safety concerns, Perez turned to an even more potent stimulant called DMAA.

Like ephedra, the DMAA supplements often left Perez feeling warm, energized and mentally focused.

"It's kind of like taking three cups of coffee," said the 35-year-old competitive bodybuilder and event promoter, who lives in Joliet, Ill. "It doesn't give you superhuman strength. It just gives you more mental drive to get you into the gym and get the job done."

Miss Universe pageant fights back on rigging claim

PHILADELPHIA -- The Miss Universe Organization says a former contestant should be made to pay for her "defamatory" claims that this year's Miss USA pageant was a sham.

The New York-based organization made a filing with a dispute resolution company over the former Miss Pennsylvania USA's assertion that another contestant spotted the list of finalists on a planning sheet hours before the event was even held Sunday, its lawyer Scott Balber said Friday.

Bod bonding: Layton mother and son get ripped together

LAYTON -- With the marks of carrying five kids and the lines of 44 years of age on her body, Brenda Ward wasn't sure she wanted to wear a bikini in front of judges and spectators. But she'd seen the changes in herself since getting fit with a personal trainer and wondered about the possibilities.

But it wasn't until one of her five kids, Brady Ward, agreed to sign up for a bodybuilding competition with her that the Top of Utah woman decided that competing in the figure portion of the National Physique Committee Utah Open and Ironman Natural Bodybuilding Figure Bikini Physique Championships could be a reality.

"I've kind of always wanted to do a competition but never had the courage," said Brenda, who works at the front desk of the Ogden Athletic Club. "This year I was chatting with my family saying I wanted to try for this competition, so my son said, 'I'll do it with you if you want to do it.' "

A muscular Chris Hemsworth is Thor in the film of the same name.

You don't need to be a superhero to obtain a hot body, but it helps

Perhaps you've been to the multiplex to see Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern save the universe from the evil Parallax, or to witness Chris Hemsworth's Thor hurl his magical hammer at invading Frost Giants.

Perhaps you've wondered how those actors achieved the chiseled abdominals, powerful pecs and bulging biceps -- and whether you could manage to get them yourself without their superhero powers.

The short answer: Probably not. But we can still do pretty well for ourselves even when fitting fitness into a mere mortal's existence that involves going to work, taking care of kids, preparing family meals, changing toxic diapers and waking in the night to be regaled with tales of the slime monster in Junior's closet.
