Blast in busy Afghan marketplace kills at least seven

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A remote-controlled bomb killed a provincial council member and six other people in a northern province on Monday, Afghan officials said. The bombing comes less than a week before a major summit at which the West is expected to reaffirm plans to wrap up its combat role in Afghanistan.

Arrests made in Bountiful High explosion

MOGADISHU, Somalia -- Somalia's Olympic athletes are training for the London Games, a day after the national Olympic committee president and another top sports official were killed in a bomb blast.

ISLAMABAD -- A Taliban suicide bomber detonated his explosives near a vehicle carrying a senior police official in a southern Pakistani port city on Thursday, killing four people, officials said.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A suicide bomber on a motorcycle killed at least 10 people, including three American soldiers, at a park in a relatively peaceful area of northern Afghanistan on Wednesday, part of an increase in violence at the start of the spring fighting season.

11 killed, 29 injured by roadside bomb in India

NEW DELHI -- A roadside bomb killed 11 paramilitary officers and wounded 29 others Tuesday as they were traveling in a minibus in India's western state of Maharashtra. Although no group took immediate responsibility, authorities blamed insurgent Maoists.

6 British troops killed in massive Afghan blast

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Six British troops were missing and presumed dead after a massive blast destroyed their tank-like armored vehicle in Helmand province, British and coalition military officials said Wednesday. It would be the largest loss of British military lives in a single incident in Afghanistan in nearly three years.

Iranian blows off legs in Bangkok blast

BANGKOK  -- An Iranian man carrying grenades blew off his own legs and wounded four civilians in a trio of blasts that shook a busy Bangkok neighborhood on Tuesday, Thai authorities said.

The explosions came a day after an Israeli diplomatic car was bombed in India -- an attack Israel blamed on Iran. Authorities say its unclear whether Tuesday's Bangkok explosions were linked to the New Delhi attack, but Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said, "we can't rule out any possibility."

Syria says at least 11 killed in Damascus blast

DAMASCUS, Syria -- An explosion ripped through a busy intersection in the Syrian capital Friday, hitting a police bus and killing at least 11 people and possibly many more in an attack that left pools of blood in the streets and marked the second deadly attack in the capital in as many weeks, Syrian authorities said.
