Prep basketball: Lancers get swatted by Braves

LAYTON -- Playing at a .500 clip (4-4) so far this season, Layton has had some good games and some bad games.

After Tuesday night's blowout, add an 'L' to the Lancers' overall preseason record.

A talented (8-2) Bountiful bunch took an early first quarter lead and was never in much trouble the rest of the way as the Braves cruised to a comfortable, if not pretty 76-61 road victory.

Girls basketball: Layton prevails, but loses point guard

LAYTON -- Three days before Christmas and the Lancers got an early lump of coal in their stockings.

Layton High remained undefeated Thursday -- holding off the Lakers 42-35 in a non-league game -- but lost its two-year starting point guard for four weeks and maybe longer.

Senior Amber Daly suffered a possible torn tendon in the middle finger of her left (non-shooting) hand in the last two minutes of the second quarter.

The Lancers (8-0 overall) had a 20-point lead at 1:16 of the second quarter, but got outscored 25-15 during the second half.

Weber placed four wrestlers at the top of the 145, 160, 182, 220 classes to take second place, and Logan rounded out the top three, putting wrestlers at the top of the 126, 132, 138, 170 and 285 classes.

In the girls team chase, Weber topped Fremont, with Ogden third and Roy fourth.

OREM — The Darts got their payback, and with it, the state 5-A volleyball title.

Bonneville lost the ball five times and Sky View quarterback Nicholas Carver made them pay with 231 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-29 passing.

"You can't turn the ball over five times against anybody," Bonneville coach Randy Johnson said. "It gives them the short field and when you give a team that many opportunities they're going to score."

Prep volleyball: Trojans clinch at least a tie for title

GARLAND -- The Trojans did it again.

To no one's surprise, Morgan High clinched no less than a tie for yet another league volleyball title with a road sweep of Da Bears.

The defending state 3-A champion Trojans spanked Bear River 25-12, 25-13, 25-14 on Tuesday.

Morgan (18-5 overall) is 10-0 in a newly-aligned, seven-team Region 11 with two league matches remaining.
