Sister recalls Boy Scout lost in 1961 Zion flood

HOLLADAY  — Doralee Freebairn remembers the day well. It was September 1961. Her older brother was on a Boy Scouts trip, hiking in the canyons of Zion National Park.

She was in the yard at home in Salt Lake City watering plants when news crackled over the radio. There had been a massive flash flood in the Narrows.

Boy Scout official resigns in support of ousted lesbian leader

A board member of the Ohio River Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America has resigned to protest the ouster of Jennifer Tyrrell, the leader of her son's Tiger Cub pack forced out earlier this month because she is gay.

This Wednesday, April 25, 2012 photo shows Jennifer Tyrrell and her son Cruz Burns, 7, during a visit to New York. Tyrrell traveled to New York from her home in Bridgeport, Ohio, to build momentum for a petition to overturn what she says are Ohio Boy Scout's anti-gay policies, after she was removed as den leader for her son's cub scout troop. Lesbian Scout leader ousted; parents upset

The first-graders in Ohio Pack 109's Tiger Scouts didn't know or care their den mother was a lesbian -- at least not until the Boy Scouts of America threw her out over the organization's ban on gays.

Now, parents who were aware of Jennifer Tyrell's sexual orientation well before she took the boys on campouts and helped them carve race cars for the annual Pinewood Derby have rallied to her defense in a case that has re-ignited the debate over the Scouts' policy.

Sex ed bill goes against philosophy of Utah code: Be prepared

Be prepared. While this motto works for Scouts, the law enforces preparedness by requiring classes and education that must take place in order to access various legal remedies and privileges.

House Bill 363, which is awaiting Gov. Gary Herbert’s signature (or veto), would prohibit local school boards from educating our students on the full spectrum of reproductive health, harshly limiting the discussion of sex to abstinence and within marriage. (Note: Herbert vetoed the sex ed bill late Friday night, after this column was written and posted.)
