BYU's big men add to Broncos' misery in WCC

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Noah Hartsock scored 21 points and Brandon Davies added 20 to lead BYU to an 82-67 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday, the Broncos' 15th consecutive loss.

Saint Mary's pummels BYU

MORAGA, Calif. — Rob Jones had 24 points and 15 rebounds, Matthew Dellavedova added 18 points and a career-high 12 assists and Saint Mary's used a big run coming out of halftime to beat BYU 98-82 on Thursday in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Stephen Holt scored a career-high 21 points and Jorden Page had 13 for the Gaels (12-2), who made 12 3-pointers and led by 22 before BYU made a brief run late.

Jones was only 6 of 14 from the floor but made up for it by going 10 for 10 on free throws for his ninth double-double this season.

Cougars hope for big finish in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas -- When BYU opted for football independence, the Cougars no longer had a conference title to play for and were out of any possible BCS contention after two early losses.

Things certainly change when you're out on your own.

"You kind of have to be more introspective as a team to try to figure out what you can pull out of every player, see how good of a team we can become," senior linebacker Jameson Frazier said. "That was more of a goal for us because we didn't have the conference there."

Gauchos no sweat for Cougars in Provo

PROVO -- Matt Carlino scored 22 points and Noah Hartsock 21 to guide BYU past UC Santa Barbara 89-75 on Thursday night.

Brandon Davies added 17 and Charles Abouo 16 for the Cougars (10-3), who won their second in a row. Carlino also had six assists.

Orlando Johnson and James Nunnally scored 22 points apiece for the Gauchos (5-5), who dropped their third straight. Jaime Serna added 12 points and Kyle Boswell 10. Johnson had a game-high nine rebounds.

BYU's Heaps heads to Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas coach Charlie Weis landed a pair of high-profile quarterbacks Thursday.

Former top recruit Dayne Crist announced on Twitter that he would join the Jayhawks for his senior season after a checkered career at Notre Dame, shortly before news broke that BYU quarterback Jake Heaps was also transferring to Kansas.

Crist will reunite with Weis, who recruited him to Notre Dame, and be eligible to play next season because he's already graduated from Notre Dame. Heaps will have to sit out under NCAA transfer rules but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

No. 6 Baylor wrests victory from BYU's grasp

PROVO -- Brandon Davies had a big game Saturday, collecting 18 points, 13 rebounds, a block and a steal for Brigham Young. He had a shot at an even bigger performance, but he lost track of one of the smallest players on the court.

Davies' buzzer-beating 3-point attempt was blocked by 5-foot-10 Pierre Jackson, and the Cougars lost 86-83 to No. 6 Baylor at the Marriott Center.

"I had no idea where he came from," Davies said. "I didn't see him at all. The clock was winding down. Obviously, I could have made the better play but unfortunately we didn't get the shot off."

Nelson's big day leads BYU in Hawaii

HONOLULU -- Riley Nelson threw for 363 yards and three scores to lead Brigham Young to a 41-20 win over Hawaii on Saturday.

The Armed Forces Bowl-bound Cougars (9-3), who trailed in the second quarter, rallied with 34 consecutive points to end postseason aspirations for the Warriors (6-7). Hawaii needed to beat the Cougars to secure a berth in the Hawaii Bowl.

Nelson, who missed most of the last two games due to injury, completed 25 of 37 passes. BYU racked up 530 yards of offense -- including 296 in the second half -- and 28 first downs.

Hartsock's 23 lifts BYU over visiting Ducks in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY -- Noah Hartsock admits he doesn't have the greatest leaping ability, nor is he the tallest player on the court.

What the Brigham Young senior has is smarts, and a lot of determination.

He used that combination Saturday to help the Cougars cruise to a 79-65 victory over Oregon, scoring a career-high 23 points, with 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

BYU upends Outlaws on penalty kick

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- B.J. Pugmire's penalty kick in the 29th minute proved the difference as the BYU Cougars edged the Ogden Outlaws 1-0 on the soggy pitch of Bonneville High School Saturday evening.

Despite controlling most of the second half and one-upping the Cougars 5-4 in the shots-on-goal column, Ogden couldn't find the net after repeated attempts sailed wide, high, or into the arms of BYU keeper Cory Cosgrove who notched four saves on the afternoon.

"Both teams had opportunities but they got that break and we weren't able to get one," Ogden coach Mike Hickman said. "It's just the story of the game of soccer sometimes, you create and create and when you get a chance you've got to bury it."
