Buddhists anticipate flower festival in honor of Buddha's birth

OGDEN - Members of the Ogden Buddhist Church, 155 North St., are inviting the public to celebrate with them, at 10 a.m. Sunday, the birth of the Buddha, in their annual Hanamatsuri service.

"It's the biggest celebration of the year for our Buddhist community," said Mike Monson, a minister's assistant at the church. "We dress up our chapel and our children and so forth, and they all participate in a traditional ceremony recognizing the importance that the Buddha has in our lives."

Thai-Lao New Year celebration planned

LAYTON -- The public is invited to a free Songkran Festival, the Thai-Lao New Year celebration, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 14, at Wat Dhammagunaram Buddhist Temple, 644 E. 1000 North, in Layton.

Intro to Buddhism classes offered in Ogden

OGDEN -- The Ogden Buddhist Church will hold an Introduction to Buddhism class beginning Feb. 29. The class will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays and will be taught by Mike Monson at the Ogden Buddhist Church, 155 E. 400 North in Ogden.

There will be a total of 10 sessions, and the series will conclude May 2. The cost is $25, which covers books and materials.

Ogden church welcomes all faiths to learn from Buddhism

OGDEN -- The Rev. Jerry Hirano looks relaxed as he sits in a room in the Ogden Buddhist Church, where he has been the minister since 1999. With him are his assistant ministers, Annette Koga and Mike Monson.

Hirano is also the minister -- or kaikyoshi in Japanese -- for the Salt Lake Buddhist Church and chairman of the Buddhist Churches of America Ministers Association.

He also teaches advanced classes in Jodo Shinshu, a branch of Mahayana Buddhism, which recognizes all people as potential buddhas.

Buddhist temple plans Summerfest

LAYTON -- The public is invited to the Summerfest Food Fair from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Wat Dhammagunaram Buddhist Temple, 644 E. 1000 North in Layton. The event will feature authentic Thai food, music and dances all day.

Obon Festival to honor the departed

OGDEN -- The public is invited to participate in a special event next Saturday at the Ogden Buddhist Temple. It's the annual Obon Festival, the congregation's most colorful annual event.

A custom of honoring the deceased spirits of one's ancestors, the festival will mirror a more than 500-year-old Japanese Buddhist custom that now takes place in a host of locations each summer around the world.

Free concert to aid Japan

SALT LAKE CITY -- This Sunday at 6:30 p.m., The University of Utah's School of Music will host "The Relief Concert for Japan" at Libby Gardner Hall, 1395 President's Circle, Salt Lake City.

LAYTON -- Today and Sunday mark an important ceremony at the Wat Dhammagunaram Buddhist Temple, 644 E. 1000 North, in Layton.

The public is invited to participate today from 6 p.m. to midnight, with Loy Krathong music and dance, and Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. with a Kathin Robe Offering ceremony that begins with a sermon and offering of alms to the monks.
