Bullet train

This undated artistic rendering provided by Las Vegas Railway Express shows the interior of the X Train, a proposed luxury Òparty train that would run from Fullerton, Calif., to downtown Las Vegas. For $99 each way, passengers would get food, drinks, access to two on-board "ultra lounges" and other amenities. The company signed an agreement last week with Union Pacific Railroad allowing them to use a set of tracks that leads to downtown Las Vegas but hasn't seen passenger traffic in 15 years. LAS VEGAS — As if a weekend in Las Vegas isn’t wild enough for Southern Californians, a Nevada entrepreneur is about to add five more hours of party to either end.

California high-speed rail to cost $98B, plan says

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The new business plan for California’s high-speed rail system shows the nation’s most ambitious state rail project could cost nearly $100 billion in inflation-adjusted funding over a 20-year construction period, according to a draft copy of the plan shared with The Associated Press.

Florida lawmakers sue to force governor to build high-speed train

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Launching a constitutional battle, two state lawmakers asked the Florida Supreme Court on Tuesday to order Gov. Rick Scott to build a high-speed train from Orlando to Tampa.

Sens. Thad Altman, R-Viera, and Arthenia Joyner, D-Tampa, argue in the 25-page suit that Scott must take $2.4 billion in federal funding and complete the project because of a law (SB 1212) passed by the Legislature during a special session in 2009.

The suit, Joyner said, is "necessary at this time because our governor's new -- to let him know this is not a monarchy, he is not a king; this is a democracy."

Backers rally supporters of Calif. bullet train

LOS ANGELES -- Advocates of the proposed California bullet train are planning to turn out hundreds of supporters this week at hearings before Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., an influential House transportation committee chairman who has been skeptical of the state's high-speed rail project.

In addition to general supporters, organizers say they want to enlist the help of those with a vested interest in the project, including labor and current contractors, in an attempt to drown out critics, some of whom have challenged the train's ridership and cost estimates.
