SALT LAKE CITY -- Troy James Knapp was dodging authorities, again.

The fugitive with a fondness for whiskey and a dislike of living near people had been wanted for a string of break-ins for years at cabins in Utah's mountains. With each near miss, each wanted poster and each threatening note left behind for law enforcement, the legend of him only grew.

Reminder: Lock up your valuables; West Point sees rash of auto burglaries

WEST POINT — Following a rash of burglaries — which included the theft of a shotgun — officers are once more asking residents to lock their vehicles, keep valuables out of sight and to shut garage doors.

Thieves took from vehicles almost anything in plain sight, including a Benelli shotgun, purses, wallets and sunglasses, said Davis County Sheriff’s Sgt. Susan Poulsen.

“We need to keep things locked up, because we’re living in a different time,” Poulsen said.

The wallets and purses had Social Security cards, driver’s licenses, bank cards and credit cards in them.

Hot-tubbing West Point man helps catch neighborhood burglar

WEST POINT — Rub a dub-dub, catching a crook from his tub.

A West Point man, who wished not to be identified, recently spotted a neighborhood burglary in progress while sitting in his outdoor hot tub.

“(The man) watched as a male dressed in all dark clothing walked up to his neighbor’s sheds, vehicles and garages and took the belongings,” according to a Davis County Sheriff’s Office news release.

“The burglar didn’t know he was being watched, and (the witness) didn’t want to alert him, so he silently waited until he could call the police without giving himself away,” the post states.
