OGDEN -- The Top of Utah's two largest ski resorts have once again received accolades from a leading industry publication as cooler weather begins to turn local minds toward another season on the slopes.
The positive publicity from SKI magazine could give a welcome boost to Powder Mountain and Snowbasin, which, like other resorts around the country, are bracing for a potentially tough season as the economy continues to founder.
Much like last year, SKI's annual survey of its readers resulted in high marks for Powder Mountain in the areas of snow quality, value and weather.
Snowbasin was noted mainly for its facilities and amenities, including lifts, service and on-mountain dining.
"It adds to the credibility since it's the readers who are reinforcing the quality of our mountain and our facilities," said Jodi Holmgren, marketing director for Snowbasin.
Powder Mountain spokeswoman Carolyn Daniels said the resort was thrilled to learn it placed ninth for overall satisfaction among all ski areas in North America (U.S. and Canada).
Daniels said Powder Mountain, the only Utah ski area that doesn't use snowmaking equipment, has placed in the top three for snow quality and value every year it has been in the rankings.
"That's the area we like to concentrate on," she said. "We continue to look at new experiences that will take people to untracked powder."
This year's SKI rankings feature two or more Utah resorts in the top 10 in nearly every category.
Deer Valley took the top overall spot for the third year in a row. Alta and Snowbird also appear on numerous lists, as do Brighton, Solitude and Park City Mountain Resort.
As in past years, Utah resorts dominate in the categories of snow quality and weather, as well as ease of access, due to their close proximity to Salt Lake City International Airport.
Holmgren said it's a plus to have both Snowbasin and Powder Mountain receive recognition from the nation's top ski magazine.
"It reinforces that we have a lot to offer in the Top of Utah."
