Banks, their loans a lot like slot machines

During the financial crash of 2008, I read a lot of commentary comparing our financial system to casinos. The obvious idea was that people and banks were using the market to gamble. The less obvious idea was, who was acting as the casino?

Quester board sets dividend

SALT LAKE CITY — The Questar Corp. board of directors on Friday approved a quarterly stock dividend of 16.25 cents per share.

A common stock dividend is money that’s paid each quarter to shareholders of the company, as a form of return on investment. This dividend, payable March 12 to any shareholders of record as of Feb. 24, is the same as the previous quarter, according to a news release from the natural gas company.

This is Questar’s 269th consecutive dividend.

Many still jobless despite better economic numbers

With Utah’s job growth hovering around 3 percent and the nation’s job growth at 1.3 percent, it is clear that the state continues to fare better than the nation when it comes to jobs.

According to a study released last week, 610,000 U.S. consumers jilted their existing bank and hooked up with a new one between October and December, specifically citing "Bank Transfer Day" as their reason.

More than 600,000 angry consumers switched banks

Three months ago, many bank customers were fuming. They didn't like big bank bailouts, and they didn't like the $5 debit card fees that Bank of America and other institutions were rolling out.

Across the country, consumer activists and Occupy Wall Street groups urged customers to dump their old bank and switch to a new one, presumably with fewer fees. Through blogs, billboards and bullhorns, Nov. 5 was officially designated as "Bank Transfer Day."

So what was the result?

The 10 worst cars ever sold in America

Americans are buying cars at the fastest pace in years and automakers are bringing out new vehicles that get rave reviews for safety and fuel economy.

Some analysts say the post-recession period may represent a new age for the industry, and that's made us a touch nostalgic for the days when the Detroit Three made more cars than they could sell and overseas companies thought American consumers were suckers for anything with a European name and styling.

In that vein, the Los Angeles Times asked the editors at auto information company Edmunds.com to put together a list of the 10 worst cars ever sold in America. The Times also asked David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' automotive test center, to weigh in. And then we gave our online readers a chance to vote on a vehicle to add to the worst 10 list. That vehicle replaces a 1917 Chevrolet that only the folks at Edmunds seem to remember.

Digital biz: Word of mouth is your best friend and your worst enemy

In the world of marketing, word of mouth is still king.

It can make or break your business. This is especially true with the advent of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, where people can instantly share their thoughts and feelings with hundreds and sometimes thousands of friends.
