City sees more building permits

PLEASANT VIEW -- Community Development Director Bruce Talbot reported that more residential building permits are in than the city had budgeted, with 31 residential building permits so far this fiscal year.

Talbot said in the same time period in 2007 the city had 50 residential building permits, and in 2008 in the same time period it had only 13 residential building permits.

"This is what we based our current budget on," said Talbot. He and City Recorder Laurie Hellstrom worked together on the budget for this year and decided they had better prepare for skimpy forecasts.

"We're looking good. We only budgeted for 24 (residential building permits) for the whole year," said Talbot.

Associate City Administrator JJ Allen said the city also has three commercial building permits so far this fiscal year.

Talbot is concerned about decisions to be made by the Legislature concerning water situations and canals that could affect Pleasant View. He said a big issue at the Legislature is using funding from the state budget for local jurisdictions.

"They may take funds they are giving to local jurisdictions, then we could be hammered," said Talbot, "They are talking about doing just that."

Councilman Todd Walker asked how Ogden ended up with the new WinCo Foods store and Pleasant View didn't.

"We would have loved to have WinCo out here; they go into bigger metropolitan areas," said Talbot. He said developers had invited WinCo into the Pleasant View area but weren't able to get it.

"I was surprised at the size -- they are huge," Talbot said.
