EnergySolutions pushes radioactive waste blending

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions Inc. is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to allow it to mix more potent low-level radioactive waste with the materials it already disposes of at its Utah facility.

EnergySolutions told the NRC Tuesday that it is safe and consistent with current law to blend the higher-level waste with the Class A waste it disposes of now.

Utah law bars Class B and C waste but is silent on blending.

The NRC is deciding whether to ease current restrictions on blending or to ban it.

EnergySolutions says there's no regulation against taking waste and mixing it with other materials so that the overall classification after processing fits with the lowest category, Class A.

Two companies that compete with EnergySolutions gave presentations opposing the idea on Monday.
