U Car Share now offered in Ogden

OGDEN -- A new program launched by U-Haul in August is bringing rental cars to Ogden and Salt Lake City residents, letting them rent vehicles by the hour.

The program, called U Car Share, teamed up with the Utah Transit Authority to bring rent-by-the-hour, fuel-efficient cars to TRAX and FrontRunner stations in Ogden and Salt Lake City.

Two vehicles are parked at the Ogden station waiting for renters.

People join the program for a $25 membership fee, then pay as little as $4.95 an hour and up to 50 cents per mile to drive the car wherever they need before returning it to the station.

They make the reservation online and tap their membership card against the windshield to unlock the car. The keys are kept in the glove box. Michael Colman, program manager of U Car Share, said including Ogden in the program was part of the deal made with UTA and provides an opportunity for those traveling to Ogden by train to have better transportation

"It is the end of the line for the FrontRunner. It gives folks the opportunity to use a car for a few hours in Ogden."

"It's been pretty slow. It could take a few months before uptake increases."

Anyone 18 years or older with at least two years of driving experience may become a member of U Car Share. Fuel, insurance and maintenance are all taken care of by the company.
