SALT LAKE CITY -- EnergySolutions Inc. is defending its proposal to import nuclear waste from Italy for processing in Tennessee and disposal in Utah's west desert.
The company is fighting a bill in Congress that would ban the importation of foreign low-level radioactive waste. The measure has already cleared the House, but has not had a hearing in the Senate.
The company has started airing commercials critical of U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson, a Utah Democrat sponsoring the bill. The company says brochures from Matheson's office discussing the company's plans are misleading.
Matheson contends the commercial is a ploy intended to intimidate him.
