SALT LAKE CITY -- A Republican state lawmaker says he wants to eliminate the state's quota system for granting liquor licenses to restaurants.
Rep. Gage Froerer, R-Huntsville, says he's having a bill drafted to address the shortage in liquor licenses.
In Utah, the number of liquor licenses available is determined by the state's population. In recent months, the state has come close to running out of licenses.
Froerer says the quota system hampers economic development in the state. The Legislature convenes in January, but Gov. Gary Herbert and Senate leaders have said they don't want to make more licenses available anytime soon.
