Ogden gets census jobs / Convergys could add 600 employees for May-August run

OGDEN -- Convergys Corp. has announced a Census Bureau contract that could bring up to 600 jobs to the company's Ogden call center for the 2010 census.

The temporary jobs run from May through August and, along with another 1,150 in the Salt Lake City area, will pay in the $11 to $14 hourly range, said Amy Williams, spokeswoman with Convergys' corporate headquarters in Cincinnati.

Contact information for interested applicants will be released in coming weeks, she said. The application process could have online components.

A number of current Convergys employees are already undergoing Census Bureau training in Denver to then train the new Convergys employees.

The jobs fall under the general category of interviewer, Williams said, contacting people to assist in filling out census forms throughout the Western U.S.

"Typically it would involve confirmation and completion of forms, verification and validation," she said.

The "outbound" census work departs from Convergys' normal workload of largely inbound calls involving customer service, billing and other services for clients, Williams said.

Convergys employs nearly 75,000 people in more than 70 countries, speaking more than 35 languages from 85 contact centers and other facilities across the globe, according to its Web site, www.convergys.com.

A company with a Clearfield facility also has contracted with the Census Bureau for the 2010 census. The Salt Lake City office of Remedy Intelligent Staffing said in a news release that more than 100 people would be hired in its endeavor with Vangent Inc. to provide support services for the census.

Remedy will recruit qualified candidates to work in the Vangent commercial call center facility in Sandy, which will serve as an information resource/hotline for residents who have questions about how to complete the census form.

Those jobs are being filled now and will run through August.

Remedy invites interested workers with a minimum of six months of customer service or call center experience to send a resume to applyslc@remedystaff.com or call (801) 685-8100 in the Salt Lake City area or (801) 773-8614 in the Clearfield/Ogden area for hiring information. Ideal candidates include full- or part-time job seekers, such as retirees, college students and unemployed individuals.

Off-hour schedules and foreign language-speaking agents will receive additional differential pay.

CORRECTION: Remedy Intelligent Staffing is helping recruit workers for a census facility in Sandy, but is not recruiting for census jobs in Ogden. That point may have been unclear in this story.
