LAYTON -- Layton Hills Mall was closed Monday after a major water line broke Sunday and damaged electrical components, knocking out power to the building.
The hope is the mall will open for business at 10 a.m. today, officials said.
The commercial water line broke around 11 a.m. Sunday. The pipe is in the north parking lot of the mall, just outside the food court entrance, at approximately 1076 Layton Hills Mall.
The water line is property of CBL & Associates Properties, a Chattanooga, Tenn.-based firm that owns the mall and surrounding property.
"In addition to the water main break, the shopping center has also lost power," said Brian Lutz, marketing specialist for CBL & Associates Properties.
"The Layton Hills Mall is working to clear the water so that Rocky Mountain Power can gain access to repair the transformer," Lutz said in a release posted on the mall's Web site.
Two of the mall's three anchor tenants, Macy's and J.C. Penney, were open for business Monday, but the mall's third anchor tenant, Sports Authority, was closed, Lutz said.
Rocky Mountain Power received a call at 11 a.m. Sunday indicating the mall was without power, said Dave Eskelsen, power company spokesman.
Before power crews can restore electricity, the water line break needs to be resolved, he said.
"We are waiting for them to handle the water situation before we can come in and see what has to be done," Eskelsen said.
"It is a significant problem for the mall."
Generally in commercial buildings like a mall, Eskelsen said, the electrical components providing power to the building are belowground.
Layton City Public Works Director Terry Coburn said he was not aware of the water main leak until Monday because the water line break occurred on mall property.
Any infrastructure within the perimeter of Ring Road, which surrounds the mall, is the property of the mall and not the responsibility of the city, Coburn said.
"They have to fix the line."
