SALT LAKE CITY -- The U.S. Department of Energy has not signed an agreement with Utah Gov. Gary Herbert that calls for preventing two trainloads of low-level radioactive waste from South Carolina from being disposed in Utah's west desert.
Herbert and DOE Assistant Secretary Ines Triay reached a verbal agreement in February to keep any more depleted uranium from a former nuclear weapons complex from coming to the state.
But Energy Department spokeswoman Jen Stutsman said Thursday that Triay has not signed the letter Herbert sent in March detailing their agreement.
Stutsman says Triay will respond to Herbert's letter, but some edits will be made.
The letter says the waste will be diverted to Texas, but Stutsman says a final decision on where it will go hasn't been made.
