Postal hours extended to help procrastinators

OGDEN -- People who waited until the last second to mail in their income taxes get a little extra time Thursday to get their return postmarked with that all-important April 15 stamp.

Sixteen post offices across Utah will provide late-night collections to assist last-minute filers meet the Thursday deadline. Those who need to mail their taxes should check the collection times posted on each box, and make sure that box is taking late pickups. Those who mail late in the day should take their tax returns to collection boxes directly outside the post offices with extended hours.

Ron Hubrich, spokesman for the United States Postal Service in Salt Lake City, said they generally handle a couple hundred thousand extra pieces of mail on April 15, but it's not nearly as much extra mail as it used to be.

"It gets less and less every year," he said. "It doesn't really impact us as much as it used to. Only 30 percent are filing through the mail versus when it used to be 100 percent."

But Hubrich still advises to mail the paperwork as early as possible during the day to avoid crowds. He also said to double-check that the address is correct and that the envelope has the right postage.

"If you're not sure, get the extra postage," he said. "You don't want that coming back to you."
